You are going on a bicycle shopping trip on which you can buy two bikes only. You can spend £2500 (+/-£250) per bike, but NOT combine the money to buy a single, more expensive bike.

The bikes you choose can be any type, and you can even get two of same type if you want, but you can not reference bikes you already have. In other words, you are starting from scratch, with no bikes at home on which to base your current choice.

I would go for:

1. Road Bike
Rose X-Lite Four Disc

2. CX Bike
Canyon Inflite CF SL 8.0

What would you choose?

Kona Rove DL with a compliment of tubus racks and PDW mudguards, dyno hub and B+M lighting.

at the moment id probably want the propel (cost me 2600 though) as its flavour of the month due to being new and me doing alot more road riding than i have been due to massive weight loss and training targets based around road riding.

If it’s fantasy, why limit the price to a what is now at the low end of mid range (among STWers, wasn’t the average bike cost between £2500 and £4K?)?

https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/ribble-cgr-ti-sram-rival-650b/ - Ribble CGR Ti 650b (I could probably find a nicer 650b Ti gravel bike for the money but can't be bothered to look too hard).

Precisely because I find it slightly more fun to work within fairly realist parameters, than to say that cost is no object. I don’t know about you, but I don’t tend to dream about things that will never ever come true!

Stanton Sherpa 29er (will need to be a standard build I think).

A CX bike of some sort - not sure why I'd need to spend that much. Probably something Arkose-y maybe with a Di2 upgrade if I have to fill the budget.

PS: that Canyon Inflight is gopping. :###..

Kona Heihei

Salsa Cutthroat (but I might have to go to the US to get it)

That Canyon CX looks nice but nowhere near enough rubber.

For me, I'd splash on a Stooge Mk4 with a reasonable build, Jones bars, but nothing dentist-y.
For Road, I'm quite happy with my Nordavinden, but could spend a decent amount upgrading wheels, drivetrain, brakes etc.
All in, I think I'd struggle to spend 5k, probably due to a lack of imagination on my part though.

I'd get a Shand stoater which I would be delighted with until I relaised it was too nice to leave locked up anywhere, and go back to using m roadrat to get to the city.

Can I sepend the other half on a Nicola GI frame?

Was in Evans yesterday and some of the gravel bikes looked very nice. So I'd have to have one of those for commuting n stuff. I'll have a "Norco Search XR C Apex" cos I can pick it up from the shop.

MTB is blimmin hard for that money. A Transition Throttle frame and build it up with bits to the value... That'd be nice, but really want a full sus... hmm.

OK, in the absence of any 29ers at that price, or the motivation to find one, I'll have the Rocky Mountain Altitude. Got Fox 36 Factorys and full XTR in the description, so I'll ignore the fact that Pauls have screwed up the listing and demand the described bike and not the pictured one 😀 Fantasy innit.

Agreed. £2500 will get you a good bike; not a great bike ... and certainly nothing like a fantasy bike.

Unfortunately 5-6k gets you the great bike ... the fantasy, money no issue bike starts at 10k

£2.5k gets you a very good bike, not just a good bike. For us mere mortals will a £4k bike make you better/quicker than a £2.5k bike. It might feel nicer though. It's easy to lose perspective on reality on a forum of bike geeks

I'm not sure if this fits in budget, but I'd have a Cotis Solaris Max and a Reilly Gradient. Built up from bits if required to get in under budget

£2500 (+/-£250) per bike

Interpreting this as 2750 for one, 2250 for the other.

I would abandon my pretensions of xc racing (which involves talking about it, not really trainnig, not entering many races, and wondering why I am slow); and select for bike 1 a 140/150mm ish trail / endurolite full suspension. what level jeffesy does that buy? Or a Bird (recommend what you have) going for pike and top RS shock, good wheels, and cheaping out on the drive train, and brand x seatpost.
Am I allowed second hand?

2250 should get me a 'gravel' drop bar hydro braked 1x11 with carbon fork, which should be a better solution to tame my expanding belly and be a better occasional commuting choice.

£2500 will get you a good bike; not a great bike … and certainly nothing like a fantasy bike.

OP's 2 choices had a total of 0mm suspension and seatpost travel, remove these elements and 2500 gets you quite a bit more than the suspension world.

Then I might suggest to not a particularly great thread for a (mainly) MTB forum?

How much is that Atherton 22" Ti BMX going to be?

What makes me laugh, is that when idly dreaming of a proper fantasy money no object spec build, is that you can get well into 5 figures, without going into imaginative, uberniche, super low volume stuff but by just buying off the shelf from the major brands. Not even frame only custom builds, off the shelf full bikes.

Fantasy football is not about spend spend spend, it's about managing your budget.

I think this game is in a similar vein.

I think it would have to be;
- a Whyte S150S '18 with a new set of wheels and some other choice upgrades
- Custom Stooge Ti creation 29er+ capable with a set of sus forks and Trus forks

That lot should be within budget and cover all my riding needs.
(It's almost what I've got too; Whyte S150CRS and Stooge Mk4)

This.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have never in my life had £3000+ to spend on a bike. And I'm not especially poor.

Whenever I'm in the market, I always have to see how I can manage low funds and still end up with the best bike possible. That tends to mean looking for £2500-ish bikes at the end of their model year, or buying second-hand. I know that there are infinite possibilities if I was able to spend more, but to be honest, going beyond a certain level would probably end up being too much bike for me.

But if you all have bigger budgets and higher carbon aspirations, more power to ya'!

My carbon Transition Patrol I built up for £1900 a coule of years ago would be a contender for my MTB choice. I'd supplement that with a Trek Stache, although sadly they seem to have stopped doing the cheaper models in the UK so that would also be a custom build.

So, for £2.5k each- I'd buy what I already have and sack off my road bikes.

Fairlight Secan, 105 build with a few additions should be about 2500. Mountain is trickier. probably a Bird Aeris at that price although dream would be one of the Stanton full suss bikes. But 2500 frame only 🙁

Kona WoZo
Moulton TSR22 with mudguards, front and rear racks and rear bag.

[edit]
Or persuade Andy Thompson to come out of retirement and build me an utility bike.

And in a similar vein you could argue a £2500 bike wont make you better/quicker than a £250 Halfords bike ... but thats not the point.

If your comparing it to Fantasy Football - then there would need to be an element of choosing components to the price of £2500 to build the Fantasy bike? not just choosing a stock bike at that price ... because basically you know what your getting at that price anyways.

trail_rat

and after all that there will still be a guy on a 500 quid snotter sails past you.

Cant say its ever happened to me sorry ...

At that rate I'd be looking at a Ti stooge build of some description and a mason bokeh.

But I think I'd still want a big FS like my rallon as well really, however that is over the budget. If I had to go inside budget for that too then I'd go for a bird AM9.

My dream build started with that sort of sensible budget but now is heading towards US Military scale overspend, and it’s still not finished.......

Mrs M is currently planning a new patio.....
