[#4413796]

My brother is potentially going to flog me his '06 Anthem (he wants to get a bike with longer travel).

The bike is in relatively good condition. They cost £1,800 new, he has serviced the shock (Manitou I think) at least once and the upgrades he has done in the last few years are below:

Hope brakes/rotors
Thomson Stem (this year)
Easton Monkey Bar (this year)
Rock Shox Reba 100mm forks w/lockout (very little use, but used in the Alps this year )
New wheelset (Stans or DT Swiss) with Hope hubs

The basic original spec is below:

Frame: Giant Anthem ALUXX butted aluminum red anodized
Bottom Bracket: Race Face Evolve XC X-Type
Brakeset: Shimano Deore XT
Chain: SRAM PC990
Crankset: Race Face Evolve XC X-Type
Front Derailleur: Shimano Deore LX
Handlebar: Easton EA50 XC
Handlebar Stem: Easton EA50
Hub Front: DT Cerit disc
Hub Rear: DT Cerit disc
Cassette: SRAM 9-speed, 11 - 34 teeth
Rear Derailleur: Shimano Deore XT
Rear Shock: Manitou S-Type SRL, 3.5" travel
Rim Front: Mavic XC717
Rim Rear: Mavic XC717

What is a fair mates rates price?

Also, it is a 22inch XL frame and I am 6 ft 2. Would it be massive for me - would a shorter stem/wide bars help sort this? I currently ride a 115mm 21inch hard tail, which I aim to keep as a winter bike (currently 100m stem, same 685 mm bar width).

Also, can the fork travel be made 120mm at first service by removing the spacer? I did this with my '07 100mm Reba to make them 115mm.

Bump for avoiding the mother in law at Sunday lunch crowd.

Probably only someone like loco could tell you whether the forks have a spacer or are just 100mm ones.
Regarding value the guide is 50% off the first year then 10% each year after that plus the upgrades so around £530 + upgrades

Thank you Holyzeus, very helpful.

Upgrades I suspect cost him more than the value of the bike - £300 on Hope wheels, £400 + for fork, bar and stem (all bought at the same time) and brakes probably cost a packet. I also managed to 'inherit' his old dt swiss/Mavic 717 wheelset, now serving time on my wife's upgraded rockhopper.

I have been trying to sell the same frame (medium though) on here for £150. No takers at all, and I mean none, not even cheeky £100. So now on ebay.

Fork wise - it is designed for 80mm - but runs 100mm. 120 would be a mistake. Whole bike - about £350/400.

Wally, thanks.

I think in some climates (like Oz) they sold the Anthem with 100mm as standard (I know in the UK 80mm was the spec). The only reason I thought it was worth a cheeky additional 20mm was the Anthem thread on MTBR - plenty of people seemed to have mucked around with the geometry on theirs. I would only be using mine for the typical weekend trail riding, so either way it would be enough for me.

Doesn't seem that bikes hold their value - lucky for me (except if the frame snaps in two).

I looked at yours wally but to be fair it looks ... Um ... Well used.

Will look it up on ebay.

I like the look of these frames and I feel well over biked for 90% of my riding. I do like the odd huck though so not sure how long it would last.

Couple of questions,
Do you know if you could use offset bushings to slacken it off a bit without the tyre or linkage fouling the frame?
Does a 2.3 high roller fit in the rear?

Hi Van, Yes well used - but sound, because it has been totally striped down and new bearings all the way round and new bushes. It may not be tarty to look at - but is runs silently and smoothly, and will for some time. An indication of how tough and well made these frames really are.

I have run schwalbe 2.25 rons in there and there is OK running room. No idea about a 2.3 high roller, I would think it would be very tight. Fit - but any mud on tyres will hit frame quickly. Slackening - no idea, sounds an expensive faff. I would have thought a U-turn fork would be easier.
