looking at these on a new MaxxD - look clever, any good in real life useage ?

I think so. I bought a MaxxD last year and just leave it on the 'please last for six hours' setting. I hardly notice it working and despite this not being the brightest setting it has been plenty. I have an Axis on my head to supplement it but really don't need both.
Previously I had to press a button on the back of my bar light to reduce power/save burn time so reflex was appealing. Now I only switch the MaxxD to low on road sections to avoid dazzling motorists so much.

thansk for that, I read an 'indepth review' online that said it was pretty smart and just does what it says on the tin, so think will go for one.
