Hello all,

I'm on holiday in North Devon and planning a day's riding in Exmoor.

I've been once before, but got a little confused by Horner Woods. What's the best place to enter Horner? I've read that Granny's Ride is ace but can't work out where it is on the OS map?

Hoping to do Horner, Dunkery Beacon plus Hawkcombe if I've got the legs left.

Thanks,

Jono.

You could try this route;

Granny's Ride (part 1), start at Stoke Pero
Granny's Ride (part 2), start at Lays Hill

You can link 1 and 2 with a re-ascent once you've crossed the stream in Horner Wood Combe

Various good (if short) lines from Webbers Post down to Horner. Keep a sharp eye and follow your nose ๐Ÿ˜‰

Dicky's Path is a nice undulating trail - drop off Dunkery Beacon in the direction of Stoke Pero (fast, some rocks, watch out for water-bars) until you intersect Dicky's, then turn right and follow to Webber's Post.

There are other steeper and more tech lines down to Dicky's too.

Re-ascending by road makes exploration of the little variations a reasonable prospect (although they are bloomin steep slogs). Watch out out for people walking, and be nice.

^^^^ that's better than most published routes in the area, but still has some horrendous climbs and average descents.

I'd follow Buzz's advice and ride up the roads (though Dunster Path is an ace climb up to Webbers Post).

I came back with 3 ticks behind my knee from there yesterday, something else to watch out for as well as walkers and deer.

Thanks all. Will check the routes out. I think I must have done Dicky's Path last time.

Electric Worry: thank you, that would be great. email is stevensjono at hotmail dot com.

do you think it's worth a 2 hour drive each way to do this ride ?

Can you stay over at Sparkhayes campsite and fit in 2 days of riding (and drinking in the Top Ship)? Definitely worth it then!

But yes, some of the best natural singletrack you will find (just not on the linked route). 500m vertical descent from Dunkery to the coast is pretty good for the south.

I picked up a couple of ticks when we were up there on Saturday & be careful in Horner woods, NPA have put in a couple of huge water bars above Windsor walk.
They are also doing a lot of tree felling in Hawk Combe above Peep-out.

The water bars that snaps mentions are huge. Certainly caused me a bit of a moment as it wasn't there last time along there. I'll be surprised if it doesn't claim a victim over the summer months.
