[#9654324]

So my girlfriends just bought an exercise bike. Last night I decided instead of night riding in the rain, I'd have a go on the exercise bike while watching Mindhunter.

My question is how much will an exercise bike help with my cycling fitness? Is it similar enough or would I be just a better off going for a jog (more appealing then riding slop in the dark).

Depends a bit on the exercise bike really. Some have some bizarre crank lengths, weird angles or GIGANTIC saddles which make them not really much like cycling at all.
But assuming you can get a decent fit, biking is indeed beneficial for biking. Just load up the GCN youtube channel, find the training videos and crack on.

Cheers, it's a NordicTrack VX400, so it's nothing like a proper bike or even like a spin bike, also it does have a gigantic saddle! (Going to see if I can adapt something else onto it)

If it's a decent, adjustable one - like a gym spin bike for example - then you can do decent workouts on them.

If it's one with crappy pedals, a huge seat and a sit-up-and-beg position, it's much harder to use. I've tried sufferfest vids on hotel gym bikes (and even on a recumbent one) and it's really not very effective.

Well, it's got those big handles that'll be handy for hanging washing on.
