This, the pootle or bimble has a lot to recommend it.

+ a bazillion! Me and OH regularly plan a ride out to pass a pub we fancy trying. We've been doing a bit more walking too. It's ok if stuff changes.

Left field but genuine suggestion OP, might there be some therapy that could help with your anxiety around speed and crashing?

Cycle unseriously, it’s much betterer

This,
I pushed my bike for most of the ride yesterday. It was brilliant.

Last weekend I was riding with a 64-yr old friend. He squeaked with excitement as he went through a bypass on a style.
Then we went to the cafe and talked about how awesome it was.

Find friends and ride to the pub.

Find friends and ride to the pub

Is very true.  I find the chat as much fun as the ride

I would say I’m an ex MTB’er that still rides a MTB (in the winter) but I ride it for fitness, to get out of the house and into the hills and woods. To forget about work for a few hrs. Also ride a gravel bike in the summertime so I can ride further and faster but the primary reason is to see the countryside from a cycle way, gravel track, bridleway and the occasional quiet country road. I don’t feel as though I have to blast downhill anymore as I don’t bounce as well as I used to. Leave that to the youngsters.
