wow looking at the start list 80+ people out of 300 ish listed in E1 didnt race
Really? Is that common at this sort of event? Sounds like a massive waste to me.
Wysiwyg, are your photos going on Roots and Rain? If not, any of 512 would be greatly appreciated.
Fantastic few days riding. Amazing trails and great atmosphere in the finishing arena. My legs hurt, The drive home last night nearly killed me, I rode great but got rubbish times (has multiple chain droppages), but still the best race yet!
Really? Is that common at this sort of event? Sounds like a massive waste to me.
I spoke to so many people that pulled out after practice. More fool them as the race conditions were perfect. There were 200 E2 places and only 171 started. A good chunk of them must have rode the practice days and decided not to bother. Some may have had mechanicals but anyone I spoke to pulled out because they weren't up for it, rather than being forced out.
I suppose in E1 there'd be some serious folks who were out of contention after a day and just didn't want to keep racing and taking risks for nothing. And people that limped to the end of the stages, etc. In E2 I think there were quite a few just caught out by the sheer difficulty
(yeah I know we've been over this... But at innerleithen, what we tend to get is race stages that are challenging, but most decent riders can at least get down them slowly, and they're just very hard to ride fast. And no doubt other folks thought Glentress = Mincing. Peaty did!)
It's a bloody shame there couldn't be a last minute subs list though. But otoh shrinkage helps race organisers- day 1 ran right to the last minute, if there'd been another 20 people to get through stage 4 some of them would have missed the final cutoff.
Oh... But I think there was another thing, which is that it ended up being a 5 day event and there wasn't much warning of that, so there were tons of people who couldn't practice, others who'd basically planned for a sunday race instead of 2 days racing, etc. Life stops play. I took the week off to do other Tweedlove stuff and dig stages and that, so it worked out.

What a fantastic weekend.
Goals were:
Finish.
Finish alive.
Don't come last.
Goals all achieved. Result!
I'm not sure if they read this but we met the nicest family when we finished day 1. Their kid was asking us all for signatures when we clocked in and then they gave us the rest of their chips.

nah 80 out of 300 is very unusual Id say that less than 5% would pull out of a tough UKGE like Ae or Inners
A couple of the guys we saw on thursday practice pulled out,I think they were really struggling with the climbs, even though they were better on the downs than me
and getting to the top of a full on super steep techy descent when your already shagged is quite scary
some people just decided that the risk wasnt worth it, I suppose that if your priority is job, family etc and you reckon theres a high risk of injury then I can kind of see why, even the organisers admitted this was the techiest round theyd run so far
still its a big shame considering that the event was so over-subscribed and the runs had dried out a fair bit by saturday and were actually quite grippy on sunday for teh GT trails

Awesome weekend, the trails were tough & it was hard work but loved most of it, there were a few 'dark' moments on the climbs but hey.

justin nothing that high, only saw a few e2 on each stage as had to hit stage 4 from 3 and leg it home after e1 on stage 4
No worries, I guess that's the price you pay for being lazy and pushing up the climbs.
