We used to go riding with a couple of lads who gave up mtbing for road riding. One thing was they hated bike maintenance and cleaning. But the main reason seemed to be that they never really got that "buzz" from off-road riding.
We'd get to the end of a great piece of singletrack, dodging through trees and look round with big grins on our faces. They'd come through at a fairly sedate pace.. "That was great eh?!" we'd say. "Yeah, was ok"...
If you're like that then I guess you just don't "get it" and are cycling for some other reason.
Maybe just for exercise, fitness, weight loss. Probably road riding is better if you just want those things.
Haha, what with work and young family my downward spiral has been; mtb - road - running! Case in point, quality Sunday MTB ride 5-6 hrs - not going to happen, 4 hr roadbike base training - not going to happen, 2 hr long steady run - done by breakfast!
I still play on the mtb, and hopefully when time allows I'll maybe race again. I did sell 2 mtb's, but then "needed" to replace them with newer models!
I just can't not have an mtb to relax on.
I think a lot of people find what aviemoron said ^^ when family comes along. Certainly several guys in my cycle club, when they got marrieed/had kids etc, simply couldn't justify having an entire day to get ready, drive to venue, ride for 3hrs, drive home, clean bike & kit etc.
Yet they can easily get out for a 3hr ride on the road bike from the front door, come back, quick shower and rest of day with the family.
i am finding myself more and more interested in doing touring, luckily i can still use my mountain bike for it no worries.
Fitting road mudguards now...
Ordering a front mech for the mtb...
Planning to be more organised so I get either bike out more ๐
I think it's just a case of taking a break and getting back out there and loving it.
Whilst I keep considering doing some more road cycling, I just don't get the same buzz as riding a nice bit of singletrack. I also don't like that fact that on the road you spend half your time trying not to be knocked of by some inconsiderate idiot in a car. Keep the MTB.
