your right that was 2011 price - thats not cheap.

You can get a Great North Run entry for only 40 and that is a far bigger event.

I was going to look at that for next year - won't bother now
I didn't think it was anywhere near that price

Expensive but already signed up. One of the highlights of the cycling year for me and with the closed roads and big event atmosphere it is better value than most sportives in the £25-35 price bracket.

Great North Run might be bigger and cheaper...but you have to run and running is shit

Not for me - doesn't use the best roads in the area anyway IMHO.

despite this, can't argue with the last point about the Great North Run.

I'm not so sure about that when you consider its participants. In addition to the completely closed road throughout **, I think its success is down it not really having the hardest roads in the area, you've got some decent flat long sections plus a few climbs.

There are a good number of people who do it for the experience of mass participation and dont normally do group/club riding, and cause its not the hardest + the closed roads you get a good uptake from non-competitive/hobbyist/leisure cyclists, making it a busy event.

My mum and dad do it ... they really enjoy it and its atmosphere, but its only event they do a year. Any other cycling is just in their own time themselves.

** I think it was mentioned at few years ago that the road closure costs the organisers in the region of £50k ... hence the high entry price.

I hope not, I registered my interest as soon as I could and haven't heard anything since. As far as I know it hasn't opened for entries yet, I was presuming the new contract hadn't been negotiated yet hence later than usual.

Really hoping I haven't missed it for next year.

It's a great event and costs but you have to remember the event is to raise money for Macmillan the cancer charity. When you have had the benefit of their service then it's cheap for the event. Pay the entry and get a few sponsers for your ride. Given that more than 1 in 3 of us will suffer from the big C then there is a good chance you or a close member of your family will be need the help of Macmillan Nurses. Apologies for the diatribe.

Love and kisses to all.

Doing this and the Megavlanche again...both great events and well worth the money. Might even use a road bike for the etape this year 🙂
