The Torq gels are nice, albeit very sweet and sticky so need a load of water with them.

Clif Shot Bloks are probably worth a go too, little jelly cubes with no fibre in there: http://www.clifbar.com/food/products_shot_bloks/

I'd recommend mixing your own energy drink. Apart from it being cheaper, you can get your energy quite effectively this way without having to eat loads.

Isotonic drinks are useful for balancing electrolytes, but will have a fixed (if any meaningful amount at all) amount of carbs in them.

+1 for gels.

However, a word of warning - and I don't know anything about Chron's, so have no idea if this is an issue - all the sugar in gels and energy drinks make me fart like a dog in its sleep.

hmm, interesting enquiry.

If you want to do a trial (i have no idea what this may imply so please forgive my ignorance of your condition) you can send me your address and i will pop a range of stuff in the post for you to trial from Torq, Clif and Honey Stinger. They all have ingredients you can pronounce and that will prob be a good start!

Anyway, the offer is there - it will be interesting to see what you find.

Mark

Deffo an interesting one. I would normally say flapjack but oats may not suit you

The issue with gels and the like ( i prefer jelly babies) is they are short acting - you need one vevey half hour and you get insulin/ sugar spikes

ideally you want a mix of short and long acting carbs.

As for the isotonic drink - I am assuming you mean a drink with loads of maltodestrin. It has very similar effects to the gels

I'd take TBC up on his offer.

Of course you could go for a low teh option - jam on white bread. Contains a mix of different sugars and carbs, low fibre, low tech!

Awesome gels - whatever next?

FWIW - I quite like the taste of Torq & Accelerade if I'm forced to use them

im generaly packing 3 btls of aldi isotonic as it tastes better than the lucozade one plus loads of dark chocolate but its only sugar rush your getting so something with more to it would be ideal, never though of the peice n jam idea that could work(maybe whack on some peanut butter).

tandemjeremy i sometimes go with jellybabies or dark choc.isotonic like the sports drinks(gatorade, lucozade, powerade).im def interested in doind some trials for TBC anything that can help me is a bonus, cycling with not eaten anything can exhaust you pretty quickly.you burn up every ounce of energy you have then its harder to replace it,

Torq gels are the only ones I don't find repellent. That said, I know a guy who could barely get them down before he vomited it all back up so I guess it's trial and error. Big fan of mule bars and clif bars but don't know how that works for your problem.

If you could email your address to manager@thebikechain.co.uk

I would be interested in you writing a proper food diary for this/blog if that's cool. It would be useful for others i reckon.

Up for that?

We will get some out to you tomorrow. Colin is in the shop today (i am covered in paint strippings at home - on a tea break ahem!) so send him a link to this thread too if that's cool.

Hi Hainman,

Email me at info@2pure.co.uk and i can get you a wee clif selection pack out. High protein is supposed to help Chrohns isn't it? If so I can get you some of our Builders bars out to try along with some shot bloks.

Thanks
ran@2pure

Hainman - home made drinks - I use 1/3 apple juice to 2/3 water with a generous pinch of salt and a teaspoon or two of sugar in one litre

isotonic erring on the hypotonic side, mix of essential salts and sugars

Hainman - I guess so. It depends on the sugar content

Have a google - there are varieties of recipes out there - try "rehydration salts" or rehydration mix" recipes

Isotonic is (weight by volume) 5% dextrose. or 0.9% salt or 0,18% salt / 4% sugar mix

MY opinion is that to be weaker than isotonic is best but others might disagree.

I have had crohns disease for nearly 30 years, I tend to find that the energy drinks used for a long (30 mile) type ride give me the runs after drinking 2.5l or so. Fig rolls, jam sarnies boiled eggs seem to work ok, but nothing thats magical to keep you going at a decent pace for a long time.
As said crohns disease affects people in different ways.

bear uk.u had many ops for yer crohns??i wouldnt have thought fig rolls would be ok,i thought they were high fibre, will need to give the a craic.not thought of boiled eggs either but think bananas are doing a job for me just now.suppose you cannae beat a peice n jam.must try it with peanut butter as its high energy my dietition said, will need to ask her more about these energy bars but most of them are nuts and seeds which are a no-no for me.
