I have just been for a gentle evening ride and as I had my phone with me thought I'd try endomondo. For a 10 mile ride, taking around 2 hours it says I use 1400 calories. This to me appears rather high. Does any one know how accurate the app is?
Ignore the calorie counts on any electronic device or website they are all just worthless figures.
Any idea what is the most accurate way to measure energy expenditure?
Mine shows less than 1000 calories for a 15 mile ride in 55mins!
Do you have age, weight and sex all set correctly?
It's all just guesses. Polar's algorithm is generally reckoned to be most accurate, so their HRM's are the best bet for an accurate guess.

Too right, there's never going to be real accuracy (don't take any notice of it myself)
Not set age, weight, etc. Just pressed the start button to map the route. My HR monitor normally gives about 400 calories used for a 5km run. 1400 for a gentle ride appeared to be a tad optimistic.
You need to set your weight, age etc and youll get a more accurate idea. Its still not spot on but I was out on Wednesday and did about 20km around Rivington and Winter Hill, about 600m of climbing in about 2 hours and that came in at about 900 calories which I figured probably wasnt too far off.
they are stupidly high for some sports - e.g. badminton. 40 mins gives me over 1000 calories, yet a 5k run at a much higher perceived effort gives about 280. That's with both having heart rate recorded and my weight entered.
Given that 'mountain biking' seems to cover anything from high energy output over rough bog to pootling along a nice hard track, any estimate based on just your activity, height, weight and age has to be suspect.
My Fitness Pal reckoned on 1200 kcal/hour, which seems ridiculously high, while a three and a half hour ride recently covering 27 miles and 2700 ft ascent added up to 1100 on Strava.
Yeah wildly inaccurate without at least weight and heart rate involved in the calcs

Unless it's a power meter that tells you the actual energy you've passed to the cranks.
