Where abouts is Cathedral Cavern? I used to think I knew the Elterwater area pretty well ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Where abouts is Cathedral Cavern?

under each photo is a grid ref. Hover the mouse over it for a map showing where it was taken. The cavern is near the ford at Little Langdale, and cuts the corner between the Hodge Close and Low Hall Garth bridleways

I thought I knew the area too, but Gavgas showed us several new trails recently, and I've passed the cavern at least 4 dozen times in ignorance ๐Ÿ™‚

love the pics Simon, I fancy doing this ride at the end of March when I'm up in the lakes, but is the cave obvious to find - I've been up and down the tracks around Little Langdale a few times and never even noticed it!?

but is the cave obvious to find

the upper entrance is accessed from a gap in the wall on the right about 100m from Little Langdale ford, heading towards Hodge Close - climb to the left to a clearing just above.

The lower entrance is easier to find. Head from the ford towards Low Hall Garth (parallel with the river, north), looking for a gate on the left. Climb over the gate and the entrance is at the the top of the short gravel track - however, going through this way is harder due to the vertical lift between the 2 levels, though either way would be difficult solo

Nice pics. I notice on the weather that ooop north there still seems to be plenty of snow about. Down here we don't seem to be getting any that doesn't melt immediately....

I can't decide if that's a good thing or not.

I've not looked at all the pics (just the ones you've posted), but I hope you don't mind me saying that it looks like the snowy ones could do with a bit of +ve exposure compensation, perhaps 0.7 or so. The snow looks a bir murky.

I usually adjust the histogram so I just hit 255 on the highlights, though sometimes I have to back it off as it then looks too burnt out ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah, it's a tricky one to get right. I always struggle with scenes like that. Particularly when you don't have a blue sky in the background to provide some contrast.

Have you ever tried moving the midtones slider in the curves window slightly (perhaps take it from 1 to 1.05 or 1.1)? I find that sometimes lifts the image a bit. Just a suggestion.

Was that cavern image above taken with flash or is it natural light in the foreground & the rocks on the right hand side? It almost looks like a movie set; gives it a nice atmosphere...

cheers, I'll try that ๐Ÿ™‚

I almost never, ever use the flash! Natural skylight from a hole in the roof of the cavern.
