I’m told that it’s possible to attach an efficient electric power unit to a normal mountain bike...

Anybody know of a make worth looking at?

https://em3ev.com/ is where i got mine. Had an issue with the controller as well, was just a case of sending it down to some guy in london, replaced the controller and refunded the delivery charges, not had any issues since.

bigger battery the better btw. amps x volts. mines is 50 x 17a = 850wh = millions! 😆

I quite fancy a e-Cargo bike but on the basis of this;

http://www.cyclist.co.uk/news/4803/e-bikes-to-be-subject-to-insurance-under-new-european-law

I'm holding off until what happens becomes clear. If they are designated as motor vehicles requiring suitable insurance, it is likely therefore to follow that they will require MOT and licencing too...
