After a slow speed accident on Saturday, avoided a dog escaping from its owner, I have been reminded how pointy and fragile the elbows are, so what works well in terms of arm protecion for xc/ trail riding? Usually wear long sleeve base layer if that makes a difference.

Cheers

I use Fox Launch Pro.
I find them comfortable and no problem to wear under long sleeves.
Totally forget I'm wearing them!

I use some hard plastic 661 ones with elastic on them although you feel them on they are comfy enough.

Some that stay in place and don’t feel intrusive.

Sounds obvious, but until you actually try them on you won’t know if any of the recommendations will work for you.
If they don’t stay in place there’s no point wearing them and if they’re intrusive you’ll get pissed off with them and stop wearing them.

FWIW, I have Nukeproof knee and elbow pads. The knee pads were great until I lost 20KG and now they don’t stay in place and the elbow pads never did stay in place so I stopped wearing them after a few weeks and have the scars to prove it.

Nukeproof ones work ok and are pretty cheap. I’ve had a few offs whilst wearing them and they don’t completely protect you, but they certainly help.

I like g-form for elbows - very lightweight and enough protection to take the impact off from an xc type accident.

Bliss elbow and knee pads for me...the minimalist ones. Once they warm up you forget you are wearing them.
