Egg Beaters are lighter, if that's your priority, but will need more attention to keep them working to their best.

Shimano will work out of the box and stay working indefinitely.

Personally I've got some old 'Beaters, and don't really have any problems with them. Occasional rebuild keeps them nice.

aside from the maintenance/ reliability issues, the feel of eggbeaters is very different to SPDs.
lots more float with eggbeaters, SPDs feel 'tighter'.
In my opinion, I'd base the decision on the feel rather than the reliability.

Candy's, lighter than Shimano and just as easy to use.

new eggbeaters have two sets of bearings, not a bearing and a bushing, so shouldn't need as much maintenance/rebuilding.

Eggbeaters or times for more float and less potential knee problems.
