whats the best way to get from edinburgh to york on a road bike?
obv. avoiding motorways and pref dual carriageways etc
but we don't want to have a navigational mission, nor do we really want to cycle miles out of the way... initial thoughts inc going down by jedburgh way, and then.... erm.... no idea.
doing it in one go a week on sat...
cheers
A68 to Darlington, A167 to Thirsk, A19 to York
Main roads but not duals [for the most]
doing it in one go
Good luck with that ๐
sustrans route 1 but that's not very direct
monkey
mail me, mrsmw's LEJOG route from last year does this in a fairly straight line

train?
One go? Take lights. It's a good 200miles, and by any vaguely direct route will be quite hilly in the first third.
222.6 miles, 17000ft of ascent
mrsmw and her riding buddy did it in 3 days on their tourers

That seems a decent route - I'd personally avoid the A68, busyish with fast traffic, and a fair bit of it's very exposed, and has blind corners and crests.
thanks very much guys, i will be dropping an email soon...!!
will have a week look on some internerd route planners to see what they suggest.
and yep, 200 odd miles. its a daft idea for someone as unfit as i am... curse those slightly drunken conversations with mates...
jcromton, train on the return ๐
