[#1107503]

Looking to buy one of these units as an upgrade to a 305. Just wondering whether or not my existing Topo GB data will transfer to this, or do I need to buy it again? Oh - and can I load up 3rd party Topo stuff too.

we have a 305 and a 605

you will have to generate a new code for the mapping when you transfer it with mapsource but pretty sure it will work fine

i've had problems uploading open source mapping stuff to my 605, the process of converting the files to garmin map tiles is laborious

You can use 3rd party stuff - some details here: http://www.velorider.co.uk/wp02/?p=42 and http://www.tritalk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52482

Not sure about the existing topo stuff. Is it not locked to the existing unit?

Geoff, for opensource mapping I find this http://sites.google.com/site/talkytoasteruk/ukmaps goes straight on, without hassle...

Thanks guys.

Next question - is the Topo actually any use for road cycling, or is the City Navigator software better?

If your Topo GB map is a Garmin thing then it is probably locked to your current unit. You might be able to get an unlock code by phoning Garmin so you can use it with your new unit (I did when I destroyed my last 705) otherwise you probably need to buy another copy

The openstreetmap stuff on iamtheresurrection's link is recommended, especially if you want to add your own trails. If you want to really tart up your own maps that's easy as well
