I know the easiest is to give the frame to the powder coater and to have him deal with it.
But lets say I want to save some money and and DIY it. What is the cheapest/easiest way to remove it?
And no using sand paper is not an option ๐
just a shot in the dark, but how about paint stripper? ๐
Del will they work for powder coat as it's a PU based paint or are you talking about a heat gun?
nitromoors or something - can but try. it is just paint after all. powder coating is just a method of application.
Nitromors and a wire brush. Watch out though, it's evil stuff.
Ok thanks everyone I'll dig into it ๐
If my old Orange 5 was anything to go by, never again am I gonna tackle a powdercoated frame with Nitromoors - reckon It took near 7 hours in total to get it back to bare metal ๐ฅ
7 hours.......... Crap
oxy-acetylene gas-axe?
Yep, attacked it in four sittings...after about an hour and a half each time I got bored!
dip and strip or blast. Stripper may work depending on the powder, but it will be hard work.

Not really, its a different chemistry to most wet paint.
A school of piranha can strip a frame to the bare [s]bone[/s] metal inside ten seconds.
Beats scraping away at it for seven hours, fo shizzle.
To be fair I am wondering about the "new" colour. Part of me is wondering if I should not have it bare with just a PU varnish on it. Other option could be hi viz commencal orange, or a green (probably a hi viz commencal green). I could go back to red indeed.
I have googled for RAL charts, but I can't find anything decent.
OK I am going to make it a new thread ๐
anyway, if you are getting it powdercoated, the painstripping/shotblast is included in the price.
Scraping away at nitromorsed frame means you are truly hardcore. Did my pedals once, quite satisfying in a strange, harmful, toxic chemical way.

Don't think it is. At least not in a paint shop (like motorcycling paint shop). I'll try and dig about who does industrial powder coating.
A mate of mine is a sprayer, sometimes he gets pc'd parts to paint, I could be wrong but I think he uses a lye bath to shift it. Nitromors does work but not very well.

2nd that. I spent a very unhappy approx 10 hrs on a frame many moons ago. Wire brush and niromors + eyes is a bit of a gamble too! A blow torch and wire brush is safer, but always wear goggles. I'd take it to a powder coaters and ask what they use, i'll bet there's an easy option.
"I could be wrong but I think he uses a lye bath to shift it"
lye or caustic soda would be ok on steel, but does eat into aluminium though ๐ฏ (just ask Malcom when he cleaned Ogri's bike with it)
Ah, maybe that's only for steel parts then. I'll see if I can find out what he uses for aluminium. Something horrible and toxic probably
sorry - thought you were just clearing the paint from your crack. more industrialised methods probably nore appropriate. i also would have thought any powdercoater would blast it for you before spraying?
