[#554596]

I am in Ambleside in a couple of weeks, and have done a few rides around Loughrigg. I am notoriously rubbish at navigating, but would like to do soemthing a little more adventurous. Has anyone any suggestions to a 20ish mile ride that is pretty easy to find a way around? I have a map, I have a compass. I know the rules with map reading - I'm just not very good at it.

Cheers

the one Houns mentioned was in Grizedale and is easy to follow (starts in coniston) another option would be up garburn which you can start at ambleside if you want.

Still got 'em Houns...I did mean to give them back but I left my homework on the bus, then my dog ate it. Honest.

Route sounds good - where abouts in the Lakes is it?

Cheers

The riding around Claife Heights and Grizedale Forrest is excellent and it's quite hard to get lost on as it's all relatively low level. Pop into Bike Treks in Ambleside as they have some excellent route maps.

That sounds great, starting in Ambleside is good for me...less car = more beer!

Cheers!

the way we do it (it being the Garburn one) is down the road towards windermere for a couple of miles, then at Brockhole (on the right) take BW left which takes you up to Troutbeck here. At troutbeck, take the BW that comes out at the church here, then left up the road and through the caravan park. Up Garburn, down to Kentmere.

At the church in Kentmere village, take this BW and follow it right round past Sawmill Cottage, Croft Head, Borrowfoot, then a few choices of BW to take you down to the lane which leads up to Dubbs Road. We usually take this one. Go past Dubbs Res, then rejoin Garbun to go down it (but not through the caravan park, so coming out here. Up the road into troutbeck again, and take the BW marked Robin Lane, up past the Post Office. Follow that through Skelghyll woods, Jenkin Crag and back down to Waterhead.

It's a great ride 🙂

Oh and you can also start the ride at Stavely if you want, meaning food at Wilfs afterwards.

I would disagree about it being hard to get lost in Grizedale. Lots of very similar looking bits.

Garburn is pretty easy to follow and a cracking ride.

I feel like I should be on commission cos I keep saying it, but get the VG guide to the Lakes - lots of great routes with (mostly) easy to follow instructions.

By the way, while you're there, you should visit a place called The Drunken Duck if for nothing else than a drink of their micro-brewery style beer. It's also a hotel and gastro-pub and while the food is certainly in the pricey side, it is excellent and the place itself is lovely.

Taxi from Ambleside will cost around £18 round trip and you will need to book in advance as it is very popular. It's basically half way between Ambleside and Coniston.

And ale at the Eagle & Child sat in the beer garden by the river...

I prefer to go up Jenkin Crag too from Hawes garden centre as that road is no fun to ride with cars whistling past 🙁

It's not a great road I'll agree, but the BW is lovely.

Route maps available from all "good" bike shops in the Lakes.

Ditto mrsflash re Staveley + it will save you on parking charges. Known as the Kentmere Round.
Can be a bit difficult to find bw arrow sign in Lamffit caravan park btw.

Ditto sfb re the route up Jenkin Grag.

enter Limefitt from the Kirkstone Road and head directly along the tarmac towards the stone buildings, passing between them onto the BW
