OK electronics buffs do I need to completely discharge the above before recharging or can I just 'top up' after each use?

No just top up - Li ion do not have 'memory' like NiMh batteries.

full discharge just wastes battery life 🙁

Aye, if they're not 'protected' cells and you completely discharge them, that'll be them kaput.
