I have not cycled in Thetford for many many years as I moved to Ireland but I am flying over to do the Dusk till Dawn and was wondering what Thetford is like on a SS as I know it is quite flat?
Is it worth gearing down a bit or would a geared bike be a better option as I will just spend the race spinning out on the SS?
just ride it SS, is no problem there, in fact I cant think of a better place to SS... It was a while back I did it mind you, but its supprising how hilly it feels once you have doe a few laps.. 2:1 is about perfect.
Friend of mine regularly drags his SS round Thetford with us & keeps up no bother - well, actually he whups us on it.
He soloed the D2D last yr and used his full sus geared bike though, as he does for the other races too.
Are you soloing the race or in a team? I've never ridden a SS at Thetford so it's not exactly the best advice, but I'd say if you are used to riding one & are riding in a team then you should be OK on it.
If you are riding solo though, you might be better on a geared bike. The thing with Thetford is that you rarely get any time to stop pedalling & free wheel to give your legs a bit of a rest.
And I know that they have put in some bits this year that are supposed to be quite hard on the legs - I am guessing they are very stuttery, undulating sections on singletrack that you can't get a rhythm on. There were a few sections like that on the last summer race there & they were a killer.
