[Closed] Durham - riding to the south / west

A friend has just moved to Durham. Heading out with him tomorrow along the lines either towards Crook or Bishop. His 29er rarely sees "actual" dirt and I'm keen to change this.

Anyone know of any good singletrack or woods to play on around thereabouts. Don't want to drive out to Hamsterley mind.

Cheers

Mike

Sorry to suggest the opposite direction, but there is some good riding slightly to the North. Start at Waldridge and head down and through Cong Burn Wood, then over toward Beamish for the natural trails in the woods. All connected (generally) by old railway line.

There is supposed to be some good stuff over near Bishop Auckland, but I have never tried it so couldn't comment.

Are the trails still there behind the botanical gardens and grey/collingwood college?

There is plenty of non bridleway stuff about. Sad to say I missed all that was mentioned above when I lived there. Thought I'd sussed out the majority within about 5miles (as the crow flies) from the city centre
Look at an OS map, look at the old railway lines, look for the blocks of woodland, they've mostly got something in worth a try

Any more details on where? I'm near Bish and haven't found anything decent locally.

I drive past with the bike most weekends during the summer and haven't yet stopped for a blast down.

Are you Crispy of MTBNE fame by any chance? Seem to remember he was from that way?

And have a look at Derek Purdy's books for routes in County Durham and Northumberland, some excellent rides in there. I've converted a few to GPX files but not had a chance to actually ride most of them.

Yeah, that's me Kev. I've ridden Brussleton wood once many years ago, may have to pop back and check it out.

You could head up to waskerly then down across the moors to edmundbyers. We normally start at edmundbyers head up to blanchland then up towards slaley woods turn left head to rookhope then down back to edmundbyers. There is some great moorland singletrack up there.

Brussleton is good fun but it's not worth travelling miles for as it's quite short. It just happens to be about 4 miles from me and so is easy to link with local routes.

There's also some other single track in the woods. Some of those parts can get pretty chewed up by horses at this time of year as there are a few stables nearby.

Edmundbyers/Blanchland/Slaley has some excellent trails - best in County Durham probably.

Hi,

I'm local to durham/crook. There is some riding to be done in the woods about waterhouses/ Esh winning. Also if you go to Sunderland Bridge and head under the viaduct.

I've heard there is some in Spennymoor Woods but I've not been yet.

Lucy
