We're holidaying near Durban in October for a couple of weeks - we have friends there, so we'll be hanging out with them a bit and we also have a few days in the Drakensbergs. But we'll have quite a bit of time to play with, so what're the most do things there?

Touristy is fine, but I'd pick a gallery over a theme park.

Interesting cultural history in the area, especially the differences between the towns to the north and south after the end of apartheid. There's a few small game reserves not far away that are worth a visit. Not much big game but that allows you wander a bit more freely. Further in land is the battle grounds from the Zulu and Boer wars. We did a guided tour of Isandlwana and Roukes Drift that was very interesting in stunning scenery. Best thing I did there was the diving. Some great wrecks and big sharks but its not suitable for beginners.

Not been there for a few years now but, Mountain biking at Holla Trails, curry(and indeed stay) at the Oyster Box hotel on a Sunday night and dine at Isle de Maurice in Mshlanga (sp). We drove up to Phinda for safari which had the big five.

Never got that far ..went to SA in 1981 ..Joburg / Kruger / Cape Town and up the east coast as far as Paradise ..then had to cut & run as we were out of time (3weeks touring ) and almost out of money ...
Stunning country but couldn't get my head around apartheid or the fact that within an hour of touching down I was at a gun club learning how to handle my mates Magnum..( just in case !) which travelled everywhere with us ..
Saw just about every animal you can think of in the Kruger ..apart from a leopard .
Hope you enjoy it ..

I'm sure you know anyway, but there is no public transport, so hire a car or use friends. Driving can be interesting and aggressive, and keep you wits about you for robbery at traffic lights (robots) and for hijacking.

Tala is a nice game reserve with rhino and giraph that is close by if you don't want to go too far,
uShaka marine world is worth a visit.
Eating out is much cheaper than in the UK.
Otherwise enjoy it.
