Any one know an easy way to remove the ratchet ring in a DT Swiss 240s hub, need to replace bearing. 60 quid for removal tool is bit steep.

Give a bike shop £5 to do it for you?

Impossible without the tool. Where do you live? I'm in South Wales. Come over to borrow one if you want.

I did read somewhere that you can make your own removal tool by buying a replacement star ratchet and getting one of the parts welded to a socket.

Beyond mountain bikes in Cranleigh have one. I broke their old one 3 weeks ago, the new one is now in!

A bit tight is an understatement.

I got one from ebay for £45, but still steep. You really need a vice as well. Certainly should be possible to weld an old ring to a socket or similiar but it'd need to be a decent weld, there's a lot of force involved (I was worried for my wheel, last time)

Considering how long these bearings last, the sensible option is to take it to a shop. It'll take me, oh, let's say a decade before it pays itself off. I just like having the right tools. Just make sure the shop fits a top quality bearing, this is not one to skimp!

They are very tight indeed- take a search through the old threads. I managed to break a Record vice the last time I had to remove one.

Are you sure that bearing needs replacing? I just replaced the non drive side and free Hub bearings as they were seized solid and he drive side hub bearing was fine ( on my hub anyway).

I heated the hub second time round (Beyond have a heat gun too), worked straight off then!
