Got a few DT240s rear hubs and one of them has developed an issue.

135mm QR end caps - when the hub is in the frame with the QR done up very tightly in the frame, i can grab the rim and there is 'wobble' play in the hub.

Presume it needs new bearings but which one? Is is the hard to reach one behind the ratchet?

It's pretty easy to strip (as you probably know) so maybe try non-drive side first.

Mind you last drive side bearing I changed was pretty straightforward too. Not bad as a full wheel mind!. As a hub only it might be a bit more of a bugger to grip. Depends how easy you can get the tool to do the job. They're about £20 of ebay!!!.

The bearings are also £££££ if you buy the genuine ones as they are extremely high quality bearings.

Cheap ebay ones will fit but might not last.

No need to buy genuine ones to get quality. SKF or similar will be fine.

Changed the outer ones before on a different hub but not the inner, been holding off buying the tool for the ratchet ring but maybe now is the time. Seen the tool copies on eBay.

Luckily it's a built wheel, as I've heard it's mega torque to crack the ratchet ring!

Can be. Last one I changed I actually sheared the tool in half before the ratchet ring came loose. Went at the hub with a heat gun second time round (with a new tool).

I'd do the outside ones though, more likely to be them than the middle one, at the end of the day if you do those and it's still got play you can then do the middle one.

I went for the stiff blow technique to initially crack it, followed by even torque. Heard the fridge (or heat) is your friend too but couldn't get me wheel in the family freezer:D

Heat is my fav method for ratchet ring removal
Then high even pressure
When ever I've tried shocking it the tool cracks in half

For me the breakthrough was stopping fannying around with vices. Got me tool, big adjustable spanner, fitted big breaker bar to adjustable spanner, jammed wheel against step, boom- off first time every time.

But we're maybe getting ahead of ourselves... Do the bearings actually feel alright?
