Got a couple of free tickets to the Electric Fields festival at Drumlanrig [/brag]
Going to go round the trails first as some form of physical karma offsetting.
Anything to look out for? How tough is the black route... Is it like Glentress (pretty easy but long) or Laggan (tough but short)?
^ at least that's how I find them
The black is a set of add ons to the red and great fun. The whole route is rooty, proper rooty, so great fun and quite fast in the dry but very awkward if roots are wet. It is nothing like the other trail centres and it requires a lot of concentration to keep the flow going. I go around half a dozen times a year and really like it.
Time wise, red with black add ons can be done in under 2 hrs comfortably.
^ Sounds good. I'll try out some of these black bitties then.
Aye, the Black offshoots are great. The very last one, which goes away up to your right just after you follow the river is an absolute bastard of a climb with not a huge amount of fun afterwards.
Enjoy!
I love drumlanrig, nothing steep or scary on the black just good rooty, pedally fun. There's a 5km add on at the start and couple of short bits, that uphill section near the end which has me blowing hard every time.
It is also possible to miss a few of the trail markers if you're not paying attention.
Drumlanrig is ace. It's not big hills. It's not jumpy. It's not high speed. It's not busy.
It's twist, cornery, rooty woodland singletrack that just doesn't let up on the fun and concentration needed. Cafe and Rick's is ace.
Really enjoyed it. Didn't feel manmade at all. Really like the feel of the place.
First black bit is ace, couple of bits beyond my skill level but very enjoyable. Reminds me of the woods in Fife where I grew up. Very different from other trail centres - in a good way!
Did more of the red then got lost and ended up back at the castle and just went in to festival.
Going to come back and explore more though!
Trails are great, at their best in the wet IMO and rik is a pompous bellend.
Glad you enjoyed it.
I love drum too, sketchy af in the wet, not one to try to get used to clipless pedals on. I love the footy run down to the river at the end of the first black, managed to almost clean it this year, can't wait to go back again.
Plus one on it being ace. My advice would be to take a dropper post if you have one. Lots of small ups and downs with some of the downs having pretty tricky roots to navigate.
Also it's a super fan challenge in the wet so definitely still do it if raining. Drop some psi's from your front tyre of it is.
There is a shower still there I think? You need coins to pay for it from memory. 50p piece I think.
Haven't been for a couple of years but reading this thread reminded me how good it is. Need to revisit!
Mrs BigJohn & I went last October in glorious weather. One of the many things I liked about it was its suitability for mixed-ability groups. The red, blue and black all follow the same basic route so better riders can peel off, have a bit of fun and meet up with the others at the end of the section.
Oh, and Rik's great!
