Thompson for £250 or a KS ETEN for £125?
Any advice or experiences welcomed?
Do Thompsons seem to last better, or do they break like the rest, so I'd be better spending less and just keep replacing?
I had a 27.2 Lev which gave me no problems at all.
I'm told the e10 is brilliant for the money. Seemingly they are very simple sealed units, for example a new piston assembly (I'm told) is only £30 so if it does fail it's cheap to fix!
I'm contemplating getting one for my HT.
The 31.6 thomsons seem to be pretty disastrous reliability-wise, recurring known faults that they can't resolve. The 27.2 might be better since it's a later design, or it might not, don't know. I wouldn't spend £250 to find out.
hmm, looks resounding so far. Darn, I just ordered the Thompson off off CRC thinking it was my only/best choice until I just came across the KS now.
I've been very happy with KS Lev's (have two, one 27.2, one 31.6).
The eTen is £99 on bike-discount.de at the minute. I bought one last week but won't be home for another 2 weeks so can't pass comment yet.
Lev, I'd say. Thomson just not reliable enough, however, nice it seems when you first use it.
Just cancel your CRC order.
lev is a little pricey, the eTen could persuade me, but the remote version is out of stock till mid June.....
Is anyone able to state whether the eten would be an improvement over an xfusion Hilo?
I've got one of these on my 27.2 frame with a butchered LH shifter and the dropper part is fine, just the coming back up bit that is annoying, having to manually lift it the last 1cm or so.
Beginning to consider one of these for the XC race bike, despite the weight.
One thing I'm unclear on though - how does the cable routing work? Looks like the cable exits the bottom of the dropper post and thus into the seat tube. Where's it supposed to go from there? I fear I'm missing something simple!
I've got the LEV in 27.2 on my SS bike. I can't say that it has been without problems but it has been dealt with FOC by the distributors promptly. The warranty is now up and they recommend a strip and service every three months now. The main problem has been the remote actuation cable jamming when dirt gets in. To put it in perspective I am well known in my LBS for breaking things.....not from crashing but from general use. They say that a Reverb, for example, wouldn't last ten minutes with me....just as well they don't come in 27.2!
Yeah Reverb's haven't lasted all that well for me.
The Giant cable one has actually done pretty well though.
Still Gravity dropper
Mechanical and ugly but if you get 6 years out your hydraulic ones then I will be amazed
My GDs will still be working in decades time with minimal servicing.
YMMV not pretty but they do work.
I've got a Lev Integra, purely because the cable routing was nicer than the Thomson (I.e., they actually had an internally routed version).
Works fine, although there is a tiny bit of rotational play in the top, that isn't noticeable when riding.
When it breaks I'll likely fit a short travel Specialized Command Post instead unless Thompson make in an internal one. I had a Thompson of my Five and it was bullet proof, but not 27.2.
I can fix your Hi-Lo docrobster.
Reference E10 dropper, i have one, 27.2, bought 3 months ago from bikes de for £102.
They are a sealed unit as already stated, nice black finish comes with cheaper plastic lever,no adjustment at lever end, came with cables.
I would say slightly slower than my other more expensive ks dropper and lots slower than a reverb. Its on second bike and is adequate, slight rotational movemaent which i hae got used to. For the ££$$ nothing to moan about.
I've just ordered a 27.2 KS eten from italy, (last night)
DHL email says it will be with me tomorrow 😯
Couldn't find any UK stockists with anything other than thomson or tmars
Can't find Gravity Dropper anywhere though.
How much was the eTen from Italy?
A friend has a Thompson which he had issues with but he discovered storing it with it down/compressed has helped.
I have a KS-Lev 31.6 on a HD-3 and it's rubbish. I'm on my 3rd and it still doesn't always work.
In comparison the 27.2 Thomson I've got is working fine and it's on the fat bike. Below -20C (I live in Canada) it's a little slow to rebound but it otherwise hasn't skipped a beat. It doesn't however get very dirty as I only ride the fat in snow.
I paid £135 all in, through eBay
My Thomson has been faultless for the last couple of years.
I've just bought a Hilo that fails to return to full height. What's your fix Molgrips? I've looked at the service vids and mysteriously mine doesn't seem to have an air valve where it should, just a blanked off tube.
If it doesn't return to full height then it's lost oil or pressure. My fix is to replace the seals with better ones.
Oh, ta. I'm going to go back to Freeborn and see what they say.
Can someone with the 27.2 e ten please measure the height from Min insert point to the saddle rails at full extension?
Is there really a 385 and 410 long version's as ks website only shows 385
Cheers
