Is 3 hours a realistic journey time- early evening in a loaded Volvo estate? Google says N to Crickhowell then pick up the A470...

Yep head for the 470 and just keep going. 2.5 to 3 hrs.

Yeah but it can be a PITA to overtake anything once you're North of Brecon so pray you don't get stuck behind an HGV

3 hrs is about right especially if early Friday evening.
You can take mountain road from Llanidloes to Machylleth which may be quieter but more winding, good driving road recently used on top gear testing the bentley.

Ta, my Volvo has a sport button which makes it a bit louder but the only thing it moves quicker is the fuel needle.
