On my Genesis Vapour which is 2007 vintage with the original drivetrain which I decided was worn . . . New shimano 9sp chain (105 compatible HG73 I think), correct length/tension; new cassette, exactly the same as the old one but the whole lot 'slips' under load. Hard to see exactly where it's slipping. Is it because I need new chainrings too?

Yes. Try it in all the chainrings, you'll probably find it's worse in the middle ring (assuming that's the one you normally use the most). To test, ride slowly with the brakes on and sat down, and you'll probably be able to see it happening.

Other possibility is a stiff link in the new chain from fitting.

I wondered about a stiff link but can't find one. It's a compact so probably both rings equally worn. Seems crazy that two chainrings cost the same as a complete chainset.
