About 6 months ago I replaced the entire drivetrain on the Commencal. If I'd known what I know now I would have run a couple of chains, but I didn't, so I've only run one, which looks a bit battered now.
Decided to try and replace the chain today but it didn't work. A third of the way round the ride I had to stick the old one back on. Basically it was jumping on the granny ring whenever I gave it some power. Seemed OK on the middle ring.
Question is should I just run it into the ground now or is it worth replacing the granny ring and trying again?
Thanks in advance...
Run it into the ground. It's jumping on the granny, because that is not as worn as t'others (usually).
And as for running 2 chains, what you need to do, is replace the chain once it's about to hit the wear indicator.
Bummer
Replace them, why spoil your biking enjoyment by not doing it. You'll always have a nagging doubt about the bike too, without changing them.
Next time you change the drivetrain, buy 3 chains and swap them over every month. This will give you a longer overall time. Merlin do good 3 chain deals. Also buy a chain checker - they are cheap and well worth it.
mmmmm, might only be jumping on the cassette, its got shit loads more torque going through it when in the granny gear than the middle or big ring, just try the cassette.
Best way to get the most out of the drivetrain is to remove the chain and scrub it spotless after every single ride.
Scrub the cassette and chainrings too.
It's the built up grit and oil paste that does the damage more than anything else.
You have two options where drive-trains are concerned.
Option one: Change it all at the same time (cassette chain and rings), and run it into the ground without changing anything. Then replace the whole lot again.
Option two. Buy a chain checker and replace chain at 0.75 wear, at which point the cassette will probably be OK, you may, if you're lucky, get three chains to a cassette and middle ring.
Choose one that suits you level of anal attentiveness with regard to cleaning your bike.
I clean the bike a lot. I live in an apartment and the missus won't let the bike in unless it's clean.
I really thought I'd caught the thing in time but don't have a chain checker.
