CX bike, 1 x 11. Shimano 105 shifter and short cage derailleur.
I own a 50t narrow wide sram chainring - if I fit this and pair it with a wide range cassette, 11-42 or 44 say, will the derailleur be able to cope and everything run smooth? Or am I missing something basic that might cause a problem?
The short derailleur should cope capacity wise in a 1x setup, but you may struggle for coverage. Check the derailleur reaches both ends of the cassette without crashing into it before fitting the chain...
Thks vincienup - the cassette is the one thing I don't actually have and was looking for advice before hitting buy.
I have some 40T cassettes on MTBs I can swap around to get an idea, though. Basically the 105 der might not swing low enough to clear a massive sprocket?
The 105 SS rear derailleur has a capacity of 33t which would in theory allow an 11-42. It does, however, specify a large sprocket of only 28t so the answer is probably won't work out of the box. The spring and arm will take up the chain but it will probably foul the sprockets. There probably is a third party link to make this work if you really want to not have a front mech. I'd probably just have a front mech, especially if I wanted a 50t up front.
What they said, you'll need a road link to make it work.
Thks for the info on the road link. Looks like it would work but some people saying that cross-chaining big to big (on 2 x 11) is asking too much and can explode the derailleur. Assume there would be similar problems with a single chainring.
Unfortunately looks like I'll need to be sensible and just stick a front derailleur on.
I had 10s 105 running pretty happily with 1x 11-36 despite only being quoted for 28. The offset upper jockey buys you extra clearance. 40+ will probably be pushing it though unless it's changed a fair bit- if wolftooth say the roadlink will work I'd be inclined to believe them.
Your other option is a Wolftooth Tanpan and a MTB rear mech. I have one and it's a very handy setup.
Some people would blame the end of the earth on cross-chaining. ย 1x FUD if you ask me. ย Use a chain intended to be used in a 1x11 and you'll be fine unless you've got something truly crazy happening with your chainline.
