[#10218909]

I thought there was a tape people were using to protect down tubes. The plan is a bit of 3M 2282 self amalgamating tape for the chain stay, but it's not adhesive backed so won't work on the down tube.

Any suggestions to protect it from rock strikes?

Rockguardz for the premuim made to measure solution.

Cut section of old tyre and zip ties, for the more budget concious.

Or some sticky-back foam rubber strip?

(I tried to post a link, but the preview was horrible. I searched "sticky rubber strip"...)

Looked at Rock Guardz but not an option for my frame.

Fancy something a bit tidier looking than old tyre.

Looking for adhesive materials, but lots of them seem to be foam rather than rubber.

What about the AMS Frame Guard stuff?

Or failing that get some of the thicker helitape?

Is that AMS stuff a thicker rubber type material? Couldn't work out if it was foam, or just like helitape.

I cracked my Bronson CC riding a year ago in the Lakes... I have since put a Rockguardz on its replacement and it has some pretty big bits of damage on it, which would have cracked the Bronson again I reckon.   A guard is a must if you are rocking carbon somewhere rocky imho..

What about the AMS Frame Guard stuff?

That's what I've got. Very good it is. It's like a honeycombed thick (well a couple of mm) rubber thingy stuff. Can't imagine any rocks would duff it.

I got some 3M 2228 tape off eBay and that sticks to the frame really well.

Was thinking of putting a strip on fro Revs this weekend..

Good to know, I was going to order a roll of wide 2228 buy didn't think it was sticky. That should do it.

I use a section of old tyre (as do mates) when riding anywhere rocky. Does the job, plus I quite like the home brew look

do you just cabletie the tyre on?

I use old inner tubes, cut into long strips and wrap around the chain stay. Sometimes cut a section  For the down tube and zip tie. Looks better and is lighter than a tyre.

For all the other bits I use wickes outdoor clear waterproof tape. They were selling it off once so I bought a load for £1 a roll. Sticks well and is easy to apply. As it's waterproof it doesn't come off or let sand underneath it. It's also fairly durable.

I'm not that bothered about marking a frame, I actually like the fact it looks used but a protected frame sells better when it's time to upgrade.

Inner tubes? Are your local trails made of marshmallow or candy floss?...

Hmmmmm marshmallows

😂 No, but they are also not made of huge rock gardens.

I've found most damage Is from rocks bouncing up rather than hitting them. Also, rubbing from my boots or cables. But I ride an aluminium bike, not a carbon bike.

Nobeer, I'm obviously not as gnar/enduro as you. 😋

I've gone for a section of tyre on the new bike. Can't see how tape is going to protect a frame from a large pointy lump of granite travelling at 20+ mph.

My Liteville has a pretty fat round down tube - but very prone to rock strike dents.  I used some shed gutter down pipe cut down longitudinally fixed with thickish double sided pads.

Do you honestly think a tyre will? It'll stop smaller rocks and scratches, not lumpy pointed granite! 🤣

Sounds like the best DIY one to me, good shot sir!

Yup, far better idea than on old tyre.

A bit of tyre will offer more protection than a bit of gutter imo. Being spaced off with thick double sided will help though.

i use 3M  mastic tape, it's approx 3mm thick adhesive backed and really pliable/mouldable but cures into a hard rubber. £8 a roll from RS.

RNP, don't suppose you can remember exactly which tape it was? That sounds ideal.

3M 2228  Mastic tape does have adhesive on one side, you peel off the plastic, stick on down tube and off you go.

Use it all the time on downtubes.

Love all these people, having paid £££ for light carbon frames, then lashing all manner of tat to the downtube to "protect" them! 😛

how easy is it to remove that mastic tape? Is it best to stick it over some thin vinyl to make peeling it off easier?

I'd like to see that, get an old alloy frame, and do back to back tests with a chipping hammer, through rubber, then through the plastic. Let us know how you get on.

Absolutely.

Andybrad (if you haven't asked CMBC!) - and others, what you want is 'Shelter Tape'....transparent, thick enough to actually resist rock strikes and not too expensive !

I'm surprised no one has bought a carbon kit off ebay and made their own rock protector.

ION SAS-Tech kit.  Really impressed with mine.  I’ve removed it easily and will be refitting it.  Pricey but easy to cut to shape as well.
