Down in Dorset next Friday (June 20th) for ten days in Milton Abbas.
Anyone recommend some routes? Or fancy a ride? Hillier the better - up to 70/80 miles ish.
Cheers
North dorset cycleway is a good start
I dont know any particular routes from MA, but if there, I'd go west toward Cerne Abbas on the minor roads, where you will find hills with little traffic.
I'd be tempted to do an out and back /circular ride to the West Bay/ Burton Bradstock area, as you are sure of cafes/food etc at the halfway point. Take in Abbotsbury and the Hardy monument, and it'd make a good ride out.
Some hills in Dorset are pretty savage in their gradient. I've got off and walked a few times in the area.
Be aware that the main A roads are ridiculously busy, so avoid them if you can, which is usually possible.
Loads of riding around the area. Milton Abbas is half way up Bullbarrow Hill, the highest point in the local area and has numerous routes up. Long routes are easy to come by with plenty taking you down towards the Purbecks or as above heading more West, all well within 70-80 miles of Milton Abbas.
Take a look at the routes for the Jurassic Beast which goes directly through Milton Abbas and the Bournemouth sportive which also use roads around this area.
I know the area very well, lived there for years and my parents still live down the road. You can easily get some really nice rides in straight from your door, with Bulbarrow and Oakford Hill some of the biggest hills/climbs in Dorset. To make bigger loops, head from Milton Abbas down to the purbecks (which has lots of sharp hills), or head toward Shaftesbury, take in Gold Hill (of Hovis bike fame) then go east and wind your way around Cranbourne Chase. As above, avoid A roads if at all possible, they're busy, fast and dangerous. There are loads of minor roads to choose from though, and it's a really beautiful area to ride in, just pick a direction and worm your way around the lanes...i'm jealous!
