WARNING - "I'm bored and feel like stirring the nest" content...
I have noticed that the normally contradiction-happy STW forum users all unite and constantly use and extoll the virtues of these tyres.
BORING! ๐
So - in the spirit of STW contradiction:
I think they're over-rated. I don't believe for one second that they are the only tyre that can do everything in the whole world, I also think they're slow, heavy and a bit basic.
Anyone shunning the flock and using anything else?

scwalbe (sp?) Fat alberts
they're the new Conti Vert Pro.
out of 8 tyres on my bikes only one is a high roller.
I think the Maxxis tyres are very popular where it is rocky because they are quite robust. That means they can be slightly heavy in comparison to other tyres for a given size though. You will find plenty of people using Kenda, Schwalbe and even Continental on here.
I would hazard a guess that the most popular non-Maxxis tyres on here are Kenda Nevegals and Schwalbe Nobby Nic/Racing Ralphs.
I use Nevegals because there are no rocks near me.
Kenda Nevegal's here.
And there are rocks on the local trails, lots of them.
Michelin Comp 16?!?!
Quite liked Maxxis Minion 2.35 front, 2.1 Ignitor rear...
Thing is they work, aren't very expensive and last pretty well. I agree they don't roll that fast but hy ho you can't have everything. What's not to like?
Conti Rubber Queens for large volume rubbery goodness.
Great in dry summer, useless for the other 364 days of the year.
ddmonkey - I'm just curious, I refuse to buy them because when I was first into MTBing (almost 20yrs ago, yikes!) both Maxxis and Kenda were bargain bin options for when you didn't have enough pocket money to buy a nice Panaracer Smoke/Dart combo!
I am, basically, an old fashioned subversive snob.
Yeah I like Maxxis ADVs! We have rocks but only in parts so I find the 2.35 HRs too tough/slow, whereas nice light XC tyres tend to rip/pinch on the rougher trails here. The ADVs 60a is my favourite compromise tyre ATM. They have reasonable volume and rubber, shallow-ish centre tread and the trademark continuous edge blocks.
btw - bring back Michelin Wildgripper 1.9 Lites in green, with an amber sidewall. My all time fave tyres ๐
Rather liking my Panaracer Cinder (F) and Rampage (R) combo.
I think they're over-rated. I don't believe for one second that they are the only tyre that can do everything in the whole world, I also think they're slow, heavy and a bit basic.
They're pretty crap if you intend to compete in the TDF granted... ๐
No seriously though... Looked at many of the Pro's top DH bikes in the last 6 years or so? There is no "perfect" tyre, but The High Roller (in one of its guises) is probably the closest it comes to it for so many people (who prize grip above rolling speed and weight etc. So most STW users I would guess!) hence its popularity...
ah - bigyinn, Rampage 2.35's f+r at the mo. I like so far.
I've got Highrollers front and back on my Scott Genius, but thinking of changing when I get my new Zesty next week and give the standard conti's a go and make a decision from there.
To be honest I've been happy with highrollers seem to be able to do a bit of everything when asked so that's why they are probably a favourite as not everyone can be bothered to change tyres depending upon riding conditions me included. I just try and ride with what I've got and get on with it good or bad
๐
Spesh Clutch SX or Spesh Storm Control for wet rides.
I have always been put off Panarace Rampages on the basis that the tread looks like a wholesale rip-off of the Kenda Nevegal! No idea which is better.
Fat Alberts here
Blue groove sticke front, Nevegal DTC rear. Both in 2.35 flavour if you want a reliable alternative
Geax Loco Lobo
Or anything with good strong sidewalls.
Michelin PR3
Veloflex Record
Maxxis AdVantage for XC
Maxxis Swampthings for Autumn, Spring and Winter DH, Mich Comp 16s* for the Summer.
*of which the High-Roller is an inferior version.
it may be a bit dh orientated but check pinkbike.com out, someone has posted up the first of many reviews where he will be doing back to back tests to find out which tyre is best, or are maxxis-pads the best after all
tioga blue dragon,14 quid from crc, can't go wrong for that price.
+1 for rubber queens
nah C9tln, i got a pair of Syncros BHT (big hucking tyres) for a tenner each from evans, theyre quite possibly the best tyres for grip ive ever ridden. and theyre both front tyres too
how is a high roller inferior to a comp 16, its essentially the same tyre!? (in at least one of the high rollers guises anyway).
i like high rollers. I had comp 16s previously, but found them really draggy.
Maxxis Adv on the front, Crossmark on the back although I do rate Highrollers as they're very robust and cheap!
Have typically had either Kenda Nevegals and Panaracer Rampage. Much preferred the panaracer 2.35 f+r - good for welsh trail centres and even good enough at my local thetford forest.
i like high rollers. I had comp 16s previously, but found them really draggy.
For DH I value grip over rolling resistance.
Don't get me wrong el_creedo I'm not knocking the question. I'd love a lighter option but given the cost of tyres I can't keep trying different ones to find out what I like. I tend to buy things that look OK, have been recommended and are in the sale! And once I've found something that works I'm too lazy / cheap to try something else...
I used to use Comp 16's for DH years ago and found them very heavy and a right pain to get on and off. I'm sure they've improved since.
๐
conti sport contact. anything else is just comfort / bad technique ๐
Minions been great for me cant fault em really
Schwalbe Rocket Ron/Racing Ralph. I do race in East Anglia predominantly though...
Tried them, didn't like them, went back to Conti Vert Pros for trail and Bonty Big Earls for DH.
Maxxis ADvantage or Panaracer Fire XC Pro's for me.
My current favourite combo is Telonix front and Cinder rear.
+1 for ron on the front and ralph on the rear
Small blocks, excavators and nevegals here. Oh and Marathons. Nevegal 2.1 stick-e front, excavator DTC 2.1 rear for preference.
Nevegals are still my default "leave on the bike" tyre.
Fast rolling, handle OK in most situations and not particularly puncture prone for me (despite what people say).
The 2.35s are a really nice size and the 2.1s are pretty beefy too.
Dual compound on the back and stick-E on the front, rides well on wet roots and rocks - but not as "riding through treacle" as a ST HR.
I had Conti Vert Pro's.
I wanted something new/better. Succumb to the hype and bought 2 HR's.
I've done one-albeit very gloopy-ride and taken the back one off.
Verts back on the rear!
Jurys still out on the front tyre!
Just swapped mine out from:
Front - 2.35" Maxxpro HR
Rear - 2.1" Exception HR (very skinny) ok in mud
To 2.25" Evolution 3C Nobby Nics front and rear, look nice, I'm liking the open tread pattern as a do it all kinda thing and bloody light, lighter than my 2.35" Ignitor exceptions I got in the shed, if they're as fast as then and near as grippy as the HR I think I've found my new fave tyre.
Bonus is @ 2.25" (57mm carcass) they fit in the back of my Helius CC nicely too ๐
Nobby Nic 2.1\Racing ralph 2.1 tubeless on my Anthem x
Nobby Nic 2.1 Standard on my RM Blizzard
wait for it......
High Rollers 2.35 on my RM ETSX70 ๐
NNs are much better rolling and offer good grip, just prefer the chunkiness of the High Rollers on my bigger FS
