[#900507]

..some part of my drivetrain means that it takes a while for my pedaling to have an effect. This sounds rather weird.. but that bit between free wheeling and when you start to pedal. I didn't really think anything of it but had a go on another bike today and it was putting the power down instantly.
Anyway, its x4 stuff for the back mech, no front mech. Casette, hub and all that are nothing special so I am guessing it is probably here.. but what do I need to replace?
Thank you!

It's the pick-up on the freewheel. Is it a budget hub, or could it be on it's way out - i.e. some of the pawls might not be engaging.

It's determined by the pickup rate of the freehub, so not easily changed unless you replace your hub.

Depends on the number of teeth that the freehub pawls can engage. The more teeth, the smaller the number of degrees between pawl engagement points and the quicker the "pick up".

Does that make sense?

"a while" - unless you mean split seconds then I don't think it'd be the freehub

does it feel like has been described above - a small rotation and then full engagement (consistently happening) or do you mean something else? (failing freehubs skip every now & then and make a funny crack when they do - I'm told)

OK, so it seems I cannot afford to replace my hub (and have my wheel rebuilt). So is it possible just to upgrade the offending bit or is it too attached for that sort of shenanigans?
If it is possible do I just need to buy something like this.

scaredypants: yeah it sounds about right. Its always the same amount really; not ages, probably only a few degrees of turn before it kicks in. But definately noticable.

What hub is it, difficult to advise without knowing.

right.. it doesn't have anything on there (not a great sign then).
Formula Disc alloy QR and freehub 36h is what it says for my spec.
I reckon its probably a cheapo. How much are we talking to swap and rebuild?

If the freehub is shot, then a new one's going to cost £20-30 for parts plus about 15-20mins labour. To swap to a different type of hub's going to cost a good hours labour plus probable cost of different length spokes too.

Hmm.. looks like it might be a bit expensive for me then. I can live with it for now and will bear it in mind for the future.
Thank you everyone for your help.

Don't wait till it gets too bad, pushing fast and hard on your pedal when it don't engage can end up in a nasty genital/ bike interface incident! I know from personal experiance 😳
