And in answer to your question, yes, trials riders do... Running a freewheel on the cranks theoretically means the rear wheel can be even lighter. Possibly a few other benefits too. Can't remember exactly, was only a brief conversation I had with a sponsored trials rider I met recently on an XC ride.
I'm wondering if it's a better system than the usual one.
