[Closed] do road chains last longer?

Don't think so because as long as You are not running 10/11sp road drivetrain the chains are probably the same for road or mtb. The chain on my road bike lasts longer but it's the same as the one on my mtb I was running a 970 Sram and it did a very good job. The chain don't get that much shifting and abuse as on a mtb. I remember older XTR chains were marked XTR/Dura Ace on the box so it was the same 9sp chain for road and mtb.

I replace most of my road chains after 1500 miles, although the winter trainer has probs done around 4000miles.

Time-wise probably about the same. Distance-wise, road chains last a lot longer.

Depends how bike-proud you are, on my roadie training bike, I run chain and cassette into the ground, and it takes a LOT of miles to do so.

tend to find my road chain and cassette last LOADS longer than my MTB ones - much cheaper to run and easier to clean 🙂

road stuff tends to last longer as road dirt isn't as wearing as mud and rock. Winter salt should be washed off as it does tend to trash road bikes.

My road stuff never wears out, I've been using the same casette for 2 years where as my mtb has gone through 2-3 in that time.

Lack of mud and grit etc. makes things last longer.

Depends on how much you ride, where and in what conditions though so it's personal.

I find my roadie setup more sensitive to minor problems like chain wear, cable stretch etc.

mine set up has done over 3000 miles still same chain casstte i think it is because the chain only gets regular pressure tension whereas a mtb gets lots of sudden high loads due to burts over power to clear a log or hill and if the gearing is wrong the strain is across the links not along them

I think the question is do chains last longer on the road, the answer is a resounding yes. As above road/MTB chains themselves are the same.

campag road gear lasts for ages I got 18 months or over 10k miles (conservative estimate) out of one set (yes I was riding alot)keep it clean and lubed and it will last ages

Road chains do last longer yes. Well they stretch the same but crucially its mud that highlights weakness in mtb chains earlier so shifting goes to cock and chainsuck occurs sooner. Also you have bigger chainrings so they get less wear per tooth so the teeth get less misshappen and this has less of a knockon effect on the chain than a mtb. Although roadies are usually bike tarts and change chains more often than I change socks.

Since they don't get nearly as wet, and I wash the road bike even less than the mtb (ie not at all) they last more or less indefinitely. Well, a long time anyway.
