I replaced the chains on both my cx bikes.
I'm thinking the 36/46 bike looks spot on.
But maybe the 36/44 could do with a link removing?

My take on it is that you want it as short as possible, as long as it can shift into big-big. I would just shift it big-big and see if you can fold it one complete link shorter and still have a bit of slack to allow for shifting.
Aside from the obvious point that too long is better than too short, having an extra link gives a bit of scope if you break it out on a ride and have to remove links.
Also...I added a link onto the 36/46 (I know your not supposed to (wipperman chain) by using the chain breaker to push the pin back in (although the pin didn't totally pop out of the link as that's a nightmare to get back in)
