I need a new chainring for a SRAM set of cranks, look to me like some form of direct mount one is in order. When I started looking it seems there are both Boost and non-Boost. Is there really a difference?

Yes. From memory boost is set 3mm further out. Someone will confirm.
Do you need it though? Possibly.
Some frames are perfectly happy to run a non boost set up if clearances are fine. Chain line is also better if you can get away with non boost.
