Looking for a bike that i can play on. It also needs to a good xc ride. I have had the trailstar suggested to me. Any suggestions or any thoughts on the trailstar.
Cheers
There's a frame on the classifieds now
I'll be the first to say it the
ON ONE 456 SUMMER SEASON
Thanks looked at it earlier 18 inch seems a big frame for a play bike.
Just bought a secondhand Identiti Mr. Hyde - very pleased with it so far. Handles 100-150 forks, adjustable dropouts, solid construction, but double-butted alu makes it lighter than it looks. So far has handled steep and bumpy singletrack and 20 mile+ xc riding with aplomb

Trailstars are good. On ones are dead long so not so good.
How tall are you? 18inch would be ok if your around 5 10+ Id say. Otherwise you may struggle to get the seat low enough for jumping n that
i have a 16" trailstar lt if your interested? lots of fun.

What makes you say it? Unfashionable, certainly, since Brant left, but dead?
I think he means the top tubes are "dead long" so although good for XC may not be as suited to playing on as the DMR.
I had a 16" trailstar for a while and it was fine for the kind of things you're suggesting.

Hmmmmm,
I've had an original trailstar (for 100mm forks), built with rigid trail blades, 130mm forks and 130mm Z1 FR bolt throughs (lonnggggggggG)
A 18" switchback (same geometry as the new trailstar and old trailstar LT)
A 18" 456
The DMR's are cramped to say the least. I ended up having to run a 90mm stem on the trailstar just to keep the bars off my knees and make it steerable.
The switchback is better because it was available in 18" and weights about 2.5lb less. Its still short compared to most 18" bikes.
The 456 rocks, I use it for everything from all day singletrack to dirt jumping and it handles it all without a fuss.
If your over 5.10 I'd avoid DMR's, look at something with a longer top tubes like a 456 or if you want steeper geometry for riding dirt jumps soemthing like an atomlab or specialized P1/2/3 which are longer (even longer than a 456). Most fall somewhere inbetween. If your a shortarse get soemthing short (21.5TT like a DMR), if your middling get soemthign 22-22.5", if your tall get something long like the spesh or atomlab.
Look at the average dirt jump b bike buyer, they're 12-14, if your not 12-14 you'll probably find like me that a short bike is just too cramped.
Define 'play'. I'm looking to get a propper dirt jump bike for playing on (atomlab pimp2 frame, and atomlabs own forks). Wouldn't want to do all day rides on it though. Thats what the 456's for.
I am 5ft8
Playing. Bit of street, going up to the dirt jump park and short xc rides 5-15 miles
Hmmmm, in that case DMR's will probably be fine, you might be better off with one of their more jump/park orientated frames and accepting that they'll be crap at XC.
I think either way its going to be a comprimise, anything less than 26" is crap for going any number of miles, and smaller wheels are better at all the other tings you mention.
I'm not a fan of long bikes for park, and not a fan of short bikes for anything else. So my comprimise is I dont ride in parks very often.
I have an 18" Trailstar LT set up with 130mm TALAS and Mavic Crossmax wheels as my do everything bike. I love it. Did the Dyfi Enduro on it this year and it's perfect for Cannock, Wyre Forest and local rides I do.
I am 6ft 2 and run it with a 90mm stem and its fine. Nice springy feel to the rear end. Only downside is that it doesn't have any bottle cage bosses.
It's described on the DMR site that you can set it up for BSX, trail or enduro use and I think this is true. Can't comment on how it is at jumping off stuff as I am too much of a wuss for that.
