Hi all, I dislocated my shoulder (by tripping up the stairs of all things) 4 weeks ago. I'm a road cyclist, and missing it loads, I have been told not to ride at the moment as it will put pressure on the wrong part of my shoulder (it had to be put back by the hospital as it didn't just go straight back in). So what I need from you lovely people is:
1) any exercises I can do to help me get back on the bike quicker
2) Any changes I can make to the bike to make it more comfortable in terms of shoulder position until I'm back to normal. I currently ride a Kona Dew Deluxe (as when I bought the bike I thought I might do more off road than I do!)

If money was no issue I would be buying a road bike... as when my husbands arrived 2 months ago I became very jealous of his lovely new ride.

Any suggestions?

Hi,
I dislocated my shoulder at xmas so have some idea what you are going through. I had 6 weeks in a sling and 5 months nhs physio. The physio mainly involved stretching to regain mobility in my injured shoulder. Then later on exercises to increase strength (both side effects of being in a sling). But its pretty much back to normal now, so can't complain with the nhs. Although my riding is more tentative.

I would strongly recommend getting a professional opinion as it depends what was damaged in your shoulder and how it dislocated.

What I would say is be aware of your posture on the bike while you recover as very easy to pick up bad habits as the rest of your body compensates for your injury, Look out for such aches/strains in your neck or good shoulder.
Also be patient, damage to soft tissue takes a while to heal.

I do find it odd that riding would put pressure ont eh wrong part of the shoulder - from the little I know it would seem to be the otehr way 0 it would tend to drive the arm into the socket - but my speciality is dementia care ๐Ÿ™‚

Get advice from a sports physio?

Thanks Tim,

I'm having physio, which is doing well for mobility of my shoulder, I'm just getting fed up with waiting!

Glad to hear you are back to normal... gives me hope! Guess I have to try and be patient...

Friends are riding to a local vineyard at the weekend... guess that's still of the menu for me!

Similar dislocation last year in September (locked above my head and had to be put back under anaesthetic), was riding on the road after 5 weeks no problem. Pretty much as soon as I had the movement to hold the bars properly. I think the advice is a bit conservative. If you are struggling to hold the bars properly, a turbo is a good way to get the movement back without the risk of crashing. Force it a bit, it will be fine.

My rotator cuff is still damaged but it does not have any ill effects for riding, only upward and backward movements.
