Hi there,

I have these disc brakes. They went a bit squealy recently, and now they seem to have lost quite a bit of their stopping power - there is no chance I could do an endo now. No leaks or anything. I've been riding a lot over the winter, through mud, snow etc. and not done anything to the brakes ever.

Levers don't feel squidgy or anything so I don't think they need bleeding.

Is this a sign that I just need to replace the pads, or is there something else I might need to do?

Also, the manual says to make sure before each ride that you have at least 0.8mm of pad left. Is it possible to check this without actually taking the wheel & pads out?

Joe

Hmm. The discs look cleanish - all the snow left them pretty clean, although there has been a bit of mud around the last couple of rides.

It is weird, everything feels fine, the pads aren't obviously dead, but they have just lost their power to stop me quickly.

Ensure that the disc is central to the caliper, use the hope guide here: -

I'm not familiar with these particular brakes, but it sounds like either your pads are worn (you may be able to check this by looking at the brakes from the top, if you don't want to drop the wheel out) or contaminated (touch the pad surface and see if it feels greasy).

Unfortunately if a bit of oil or grease has soaked into the pads they are probably useless, but you can try sanding off the top layer, or heating them up - both rather unreliable ways of resurrecting them.

sounds like worn out pads to me tho contamination or glazing might be an issue

Cheers guys,

New pads in the post.

Is it normal for pads to only last for 6 months or so? I ride mainly in the White Peak, and have been riding through the wintery weather.
