Fitting an old 9 speed Shimano XTR rear derailleur via a direct mount but ... the mech body seems to just rub against the mount in such a way that it'll cross thread immediately. For info, this is the direct mount

Beyond grinding a wee bit off the direct mount, is it just a compatibility issue or any other solutions?

9 speed mechs didn't come in a direct mount option so this may have something to do with it.

As far as I know, the 9 speed derailleurs were never meant to fit on DM, eventhough they have the B knuckle. Just use a normal hanger.

Above, you can see how thick the DM hanger is. Itโ€™s wider than the current B-Link by a tiny bit. Below is an older XTR (left) compared to a new DM-ready XT derailleur (right). Itโ€™s hard to tell the difference unless youโ€™re actually measuring it:

I was going to say, direct mount came out later than 9 speed. I wouldn't expect it to work.
