Is a rim scrap if you get a flat spot in it? I have a wheel that has a few, they are small and you can feel the side of the rim has bulged out in places slightly and that the bead part of the rim has been pushed down also. Tyres with tubes still seat into it fine but I was planning to go tubeless but didn't know if i should bother as I'm not sure if the rim needs to be spot on for it to seal?

Under stand it's a hard question to answer without seeing the wheel.

I've flat spotted a few rims and they've still been fine tubeless.

One in two or three places iirc.

If you can feel the flat spot when riding, it's scrap. I wrote off two Mavic Open Pros in potholes in two weeks. One split the rim (bulge - pah!) and left a half cm deviation, the other was just noticeable when riding.

If you can't feel it, then some adjustable spanner jaws to tidy up the buldge and you are good.

Fixed rims many times with this method.

Doesn't matter if left with a slight dent. Though if you're talking road and v brakes, then it's more of a problem if they're not perfect.

Nonsense that a flat spot is a scrap rim! I'd get very good at wheel building if that was the case!
My wheels currently are sporting a few, tubeless and still holding air.

When the tyre does eventually get taken off I'll pull them out with an aj and keep on keeping on!

Only if they are really bad will it be a write off!

Depends on the rim and the ding tbh. My flow ex picked up a small flat spot into the rim bed but even with the rim edge straightened back out that was too much for it, it wouldn't hold a tyre any more. I think because the Ex has a relatively low rim edge so a small deflection had quite a big impact? Not sure, but it was a pain in the bum anyway.

Different thing- that's just dings in the rim, the OP is talking about deforming the actual rim bed and bead, can't straighten that.

The rim is a crest, the side of the rim has a slight outward bulge and flat spot on the top. I will get a few pictures tomorrow. My concern is the socket in the rim which the tyre locks into has Been pushed down.

These look a lot smaller in pics. Think it's best to just try them tube less and see what happens?.

I'd have a go.

One thing to bear in mind, if it fails, the tyre'll blow right off. That'll often ruin the tyre, and also it's like having a gun go off (when it happened to me, with the aforementioned Flow, it whacked my hand so hard I couldn't move it properly for days). So do some caution, whenever I don't trust a rim/tyre I throw it outside the garage, close the door almost all the way, and stand on the other side pumping.

I bought a DH bike recently and the rims are flatted, dented and cracked, they are wrecked, but they are holding air tubeless.

I'm going to run these with tubes, they are on a bike that is mainly used for local rides and using for work, should be fine?

I think that would be just fine.

Done much worse to rims and they've still worked.
