when washing the bike post an hour ago ride I noticed a pretty big ding in rear rim - will try get a pic in a mo, but its about 3mm deep at the rim/tyre interface, and over a length of about 15mm. Should I try and ease it out with a big shifting spanner, or will that weaken it further ? XC717 that has had a good life...

nah - just tweek it back... there are tools out there to do the job, but if your carefull a large adjustable spanner works well.

If its not causing any problems, leave it.

It'll be fine to straighten out, I've done it in a vice with a DT rim before, they are soft though as TJ says.

wasn't till after I saw the pic I noticed a wee white line further in towards the spoke, which is a hairline crack...... hey ho, it's done 4 yrs weekly work

I ran a 717 with bigger dents than that, and a couple of cracks for a couple of years until its retirement with no issues. Tough old things 717s.
