what the difference, I'm guessing the damping? which to go for?

DH - no floodgate so you can't lock them out - so better damping for DH . Think they may do a dual pos. DH as well?
Aye, just the floodgate thing. You can remove it from the RC2L if you want but if that's what you're after best to go straight to the RC2 I reckon.
Does the RC2 DH not have 10mm more travel (170mm) out of the box?
There's 160mm DHs too (and 170mm RC2Ls but maybe only in OEM) Only difference is in the spring side

My 2013 RC2 DH's solo airs - came as 170mm but also came with the 160mm baseplate - easy job to install. I believe you can also get 180mm baseplate if you want to go the other way.

They are not quite the same though when the RC2L has the floodgate removed it's a bit more divey.
You end up having to crank the high speed and low speed up quite a bit to compensate - in my experience anyway.
Aye, you can balance that with a tweak to the oil (or you could go to town and reshim) but I think probably everyone just adds a click or two of damping.
The damper's fundamentally the same with detail differences but it still makes sense to get the DH one if that's what you're after.
The RC2L has the option to lower the travel, 'on the fly'.
Although it says it on the SRAM web site, the DH is fixed travel only, if you want adjustable travel you need the RC2L.
As mentioned above, to get 'DH' damping you can either do the mod or change the whole damper unit for ~£80.
