[#1045968]

so - joystick on head on flash dinotte 5w on bar on full , flashing el350 on the bars also

on the back i have a holy handgrenade on solid on the rear of the pannier rack - on the loop on my RED endura stealth jacket (has reflective panels on ) i have a second holy handgrenade on flashing both with relitively new batterys and are bright

my bike has reflective tape round hte full mudguard - the tires have reflective beads and my panniers have reflective ness over them.
Riding in the shared bus/cycle/ taxi lane from Bridge of don to Alpine bikes on holborn street

now the scenes set explain why 3 buses tried to crush me by overtaking - getting along side then sticking the indicator on and moving in on me.....

why 2 pedestrians walked out infront of me at the last min resulting in one getting a shoulder barge

why a car still overtook me and turned left before she even finished over taking me.

the buses and the car i anticipated what they were doing but the pedestrians looked at me made eye contact and still walked out infront

but at the same time i can see why some folk get hit - the idiot that rode down from BOD infront of me - rear light almost out with flat battery(he just laughed it off when i informed him of the situation) - weaving in and out of cars riding up the inside and outside - going between buses that were moving lanes all the time - it wasnt any shock when a guy came into the shop shortly after me and said a guy on a bike had been knocked down slightly further down the road.

Did you post twice to make sure you got seen on here?
Its bad enough commuting on a motorbike, I can't imagine doing it and having to pedal.

I simply can't imagine what goes through the heads of some drivers. To be fair, most simply don't realise their error - they're in their own little world and, when their mistake is pointed out to them they'll either be apologetic or (more likely) will go into denial.

I just don't think it even occurs to them what will happen if you go underneath their vehicle - that 3 seconds they've gained by a careless overtake wiped out by having to stop and clear the remains of a cyclist off their bumper then tell the police all about what happened. It just doesn't register. 🙄

seriously, shine a torch on yourself instead of outwards

I think really bright lights are unhelpful on the road (I don't commute on a bike; I'm an interested driver and I find them odd - quite like a distant motorbike (or car with 1 light out)? They're also a bit too bright to look at for long enough to actually gauge speed/proximity)

The riders I spot best are those with lots of little lights dotted around them, so they look unlike the other traffic & like a person - I think the logical conclusion would be to light yourself

I have an air horn and sometimes it doesn't make much difference. Pedestrians seem to just respond to the sound of engines. Bus took over me on a corner on friday my arm was brushing against the side. I stopped at the next stop and pointed out that he nearly ran me over. He just shrugged and looked at me like I was overeacting. I waited for him to drive off as I didn't wanna be overtaken by him again. A bit later down the road the police pulled him over.

It's not that they can't see you, rather that they treat you as if you're moving very slowly. Thus the real solution is to ride much much much slower, round about walking pace should do it 😕

On a similar vein to scaredypants I don't think much of bright flashing headlights either, difficult to pinpoint and overly distracting.

TBH in my two year commute into Aberdeen, the 'professional drivers' were the worst, in both driving standards and aggression to cyclists. Found that both bus and taxi drivers should to treated as “out to get you” and I was rarely surprised.

i have a combo of flashing and solid. 5 watt LED solid front facing with side visability my helmet light flashes - its good at roundabouts - look at the driver and they notice you - i had a fair few issues on roundabouts till i started using a helmet mounted light i could look at folk with !

and yes udnylad the taxis are bad but they at least dont stop every 30 foot and thus manage to overtake safely in most instances - or dont repeatadly overtake you !

i know my brakes work well at least now though !

It was an eye opener today as I waited to be picked up out side my uni. The amount of people who walk out into the road! and then looked surprised when they almost get squashed! Most are either on the phone or have head phones in. An then the motor biker (female to my surprise) under took a car which wasn't even turning right!! crazy! the guy on the phone who then slammed on due to not seeing the parked delivery truck. The buses which seem to fight with each other for position causing more issues for other road users to avoid. So in 20 minutes of waiting I saw 15-20 people just walk into the road, a guy nearly crash due to being on the phone and a crazy under take for no benefit?!

The roads are mental!!!

I think jim is onto something. Does anyone else find that the faster you are, the more of this sort of stuff sems to happen. It's as if drivers can't get their heads around a cyclist doing more than 5 mph or taking more hat 0.5 seconds to pass.
