FAAAAAAAAAAAST

150-160mm

variable travel if it's going to be used for climbing

trail centers,

he has some 06 talas forks, 130mm at the minute, and he will probs swap them for something bigger.

something bigger would be better, i have 140mm pikes and feel like it would be better with 160's

i ride mine at 150mm all the time as i don't have travel adjust. the climbing at trail centres is never that tech so it's not that necesary

They are quick on the downhills, the slack head angle and long stays makes them nice and stable. Dont feel nervous or twitchy, I feel as confident on mine as I did on full sussers.

They climb well too, aslong as you have some lock down forks.

I reckon 150/160mm travel is overkill for uk stuff, I had 150mm travel 36's on mine but it rode better at 130mm for all but proper dh stuff.

I currently run 130mm z1's (same height as 140mm pikes I think) and they feel perfect, ridden dh courses with them and they're fine. Thinking about some 150mm 66's for france this year.

If you are riding uk stuff go with 130mm or some travel adjust forks like pikes, makes the bike feel a bit more lively and will be far better for trail centre stuff

160mm is too much for a hardtail imo.

Does anyone happen to know of any shops that sell the Alpine as a complete bike?

I know it's unlikely but I was kind of hoping I could get one on the C2W scheme!!

RopeyReignRider, (as S&J as said) Head for the Hills in Dorking can do custom builds on the C2W scheme.

Only got 15.5" x 21" TT Alpines left now, but should have new stock/sizes/colours by the end of September.

150mm on the front for trail centres? gimme a break...130 will be fine 🙂

seriously, an Alpine handles better with 130 up front on rolly XC ish singletrack stuff than with 150, 160 etc.

so, to the original poster, I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading your son's forks unless the bike's going to be ridden on DH courses, on hard natural trails (Scotland, Peaks, etc), or in the Alps

no, they're rubbish.....

what you need is some piccies....

here with 130mm revs....
[img] [/img]

and here with 160mm 2-step lyriks.... they sit around 140ish with sag.

[img] [/img]

for tight singletrack i flick the switch and run them at 115mm with the two step. running it with the revs wound down to 100mm was too twitchy.

130mm should be fine for most stuff.

they are a capable bike. i'm able to keep up with big fullys on the downs, not always mind but am certainly quicker on te ups.

Ive got the one with the shorter TT than Stus, depends how big you are- youre welcome to have a go on mine. Infact if you buy Stus and find it too long and get is resprayed black I'll do a straight swap (I am serious).

Im not the big, 5.8

my kona is just about a 23TT.

At 5foot8 I would definitely get a 21.5/22 TT. I ride a 17/22 and Im a couple of inches over 6 foot. Find it perfect length for jumps and dh stuff but its a bit short for all day rides.

They do feel long for a given top tube length. 140 was max for me, or BB felt too high and it felt a bit ponderous in the turns.

D'oh!

15.5

I was tired, it was late .........

And personally I wouldn't say they felt long for their "given TT length" a) because they aren't physically, b) the ST is a little steeper than average and c) the HA is a little slacker.

But I think they ride well for their spec / geometry / size / whatever and I guess it depends on your body shape as well (maybe if you had short arms and torso).

😎
