Hi Guys,

Hope i'm not going to get shot down for starting a Post on this! But I am looking to buy a long travel hard tail frame, intending on running a 140/150mm fork. Now I want this to be my do it everything bike so want to get this right, will be doing 60-70 percent Cross country but also would like to use it at places like Afan and throw it down some DH runs. I have My eye on the Dialled Alpine, was wondering if this was too much bike for this sort of stuff!? Sorry for the vague description!

Any advise or info would be amazing!

thanks in advance!

Gee.

60-70 percent Cross country

With that in mind I would prob go with a Prince Albert or Cotic Soul

very true dude, not too keen on that albert and the cotic is out of my budget for a frame 🙁

The Chumba looks good for the price prob better for longer xc ride as its a lot lighter, just depends if you want steel or Alluminium.

I run one of these with a 140mm marz rc3 and do everything you describe. Brilliant frame.

well ...there is always the On-one 456 which is about £170 for steel which is cheap enough to try out.

My Alpine is great for general trail (xc) duties, and works well in places like Afan, CC, FoD, etc.

Cotic BFe, cheaper than soul. saw one in the flesh tonight and they look great. http://www.thebikechain.co.uk/Cotic-BFe-Frame-XS-Blue-20110719060101/ think they do a discount for STW.

an alpine isnt too much bike for anything unless you build it that way, the frame is no lightweight whippet xc racer tho

Thanks so much guys for the input! helped quite a lot, from what people have said they are not bad for XC and seem to be evil on decents! I think i've made up my mind and will go for one!

Coogan and doof doof, sounds awesome dudes, do you guys have a build thread or list of Components used? More to the point, any pictures 😀

again, thanks everyone for the input!

Gee.

Looked like this on the day to was built. Looks the same now over 3 years later, just a bit worn in now... odd scratch... small dent... still a giggle though.

I use my Mk 1 Alpine for all sorts of riding but primarily XC. Mine has old (05) Z1s on the front which are a bit heavy but they are such good forks I am happy to take the weight penalty because of the performance. It climbs OK (esp when ETA is used) and has got me down stuff I have never managed on any other bike. Great fun bike.

Don't have mine anymore, but enjoyed it while I did. Used it for pretty much everything with u-turn lyrics on the front. My definition of XC is trail centres, north downs or similar and for this the alpine was great, but I wouldn't fancy riding around muddy fields on it.

U-turn or talas forks work well on this frame and make it really versatile. Would love a ti one!

Alpines great for big all dayers as well as ragging. Slacker geom still climbs fine but helps alot when tired on big rides.

elgee - agree there is no fun in an xc whippet frame and yeah thats mine, dual air revs on the front reduced to 140m, Bonty XR4s, 819s on ProIIs and low/medium spec drivetrain mix of sram and shimano

bagstard - is riding round muddy fields fun on anything?

There are a couple of Ti Alpine prototypes kicking about. Have a search on here for more info. They'll only be made if there is enough interest.

Good bike. Chainstays were a bit long for me, but I like trying to manual and wheelie as much as possible. Also was a tad too small as I am 6'3 with a 35 inside leg. If you are under 6'2 go for it, it is great all rounder and loves to be thrashed downhill.

Speak to The Bike Chain in Edinburgh, it was them and Dialled Bikes that go the demo TI frames made.

Sold an Alpine this week to a chap who travelled some way to get one, but we still have a 16 demo available to try if you are in the area.

Got one and love it. 140mm revs and mixed build, raced it at Octoberfest, but a great play bike too.

Thanks dudes for all the feedback, been a massive help, it's funny because I've gone for a cotic BFe now, when I emailed mike at dialled he said that the alpine is a bit overkill for UK riding, I really appreciated his honesty.

Also. A massive big up to Paul at cotic for being mad helpful, I'm so looking forward with getting on with this frame build! Going to be fun.

Thanks again everyone, class forum!

There is plenty in the UK to keep you happy on an Alpine. Mike is right if you predominately ride XC stuff of course, but there are plenty of trails that will make the most of one.

To be fair, the BFe ain't far off what an Alpine is, if you know what I mean.

ANYWAYS! Good choice and you will love it.

Having had both I think the BFe is more of an all rounder, whilst the Alpine was just brill at very steep fast stuff.

I think both are very good frames. Just they both have different characters

I had an Alpine and it was a downhill beast, better than the Cotic downhill for sure. I now have a BFe and for most other stuff it rides better than the Alpine I think.

Just to clarify, I don't think I ever said the Alpine was overkill for the UK. But I did say the Prince Albert would be a better option than an Alpine for someone who will do the majority of their riding in the UK and doesn't want to run more than a 140mm travel fork.

Chunky, is that Ash from tA's old Alpine EBB frame?

There is one more in existence with Ali from tA which has never been built up. Should be getting it back when he's next in my area.

Sorry mike, that did come out wrong the way I wrote that!

You were purely saying that if I was doing a bit more XC the PA would of been slightly more suited! I read what a few people were saying and they said that the PA was an absolutely awesome bike, but wasnt quite as slack as some out there, that's why I didn't go for one as from what they said the geo is very close to what I have currently? Big up to mike though, such a helpful chap!

Where you think of the name "Prince Albert" mike? lol.
