Hallo!
Has anyone ridden both tyres, so as to compare them in terms of rolling resistance?
If so, which version of each tyre did you ride?
Mainly i am interested in the magic mary 2.35 soft snakeskin vs DHF 2.5 maxxterra exo (or supertacky exo)
Ridden both.
Max grip in the dhf and trail star in the magic Mary.
Is it for front or rear (or both)? Don’t think I would want to ride either as a rear unless it was biblical conditions.
Compound makes a difference but the faster rolling IMO would be the dhf. But the Mary is more versatile for mixed conditions.
But the snakeskin is not the most durable. I have torn a Nobby Nic and magic Mary in snakeskin.
Yeah, I'd pretty much agree with that. DHF leans towards drier conditions (though it can do anything), Mary is a bit more wet leaning (though also can do anything). To be fair I'm comparing 26er trailstar Mary with 29er DHF maxxterra 2.5 so that might affect it. The DHF is surprisingly fast rolling considering it sticks like spunk in the bath.
I don't really quite like the Mary, it's one of those tyres that works til it doesn't then you're boned. Had a couple of enormous front end crashes in the dry just by going huge grip, huge grip, no grip, boom. Whereas the Minion gives up faster in the wet but lets you know about it first and lets you play with the edge-of-grip. I guess I just trust it more and really trust is the most important thing in a tyre afaic. Mary I think just needs a little bit more compound grip to match the tread grip.
But still, it's mostly about the conditions, if you want a hard/dry/intermediate bias then minion, if you want a soft/squishy/intermediate bias then mary.
(or substitute Mary for Shorty; but the 2.5 shorty though it is awesome, rolls like a brick)
So the max terra dhf would be quite a bit faster than the magic mary trailstar?
Im sure i read on here somewhere a few people saying the addix soft magic mary rolls much better than the trailstar but i cant find the post now!
No idea about the DHF.
I bike the 2.6 Magic Mary Addix soft front and rear on a 150/150 bike. Front 18...19 psi, rear 20...21 psi. 35 mm rims.
About the "speed": only feel the drag on roads. On the trail the tyres are fast. At least in my opinion. The more difficult the conditions the better / faster the 2.6 Magic Mary.
Biking pals tried the Magic Mary and complained about drag. I can't confirm this. In my opinion the tire is fast and allows for very high speeds in pretty extreme conditions.
DHF: no idea.

Not spectacularly, but you'll feel it.
I'm not sure what's going on with the Addixes but my (very) short run on one suggested the Soft isn't really all that soft- it's still somewhere in the trailstar, sensible middle ground ballpark rather than really a soft tyre like a supertacky. But I think to get the supersoft, you have to go super gravity too.
DD DHFs in 3C maxxgrip are super draggy. I just removed a set and replaced with exo dual compound. night and day in rolling resistance. if you want minion predictability but fast rolling and can put up with a tyre that drifts more easily go Dual.
I'm not sure if maxterra is the same thing as dual though.
Why oh why couldn't maxxis have just stayed with slow reezay 40a, 50a and 60a maxxpro for their DH treads?
Oh and stayed at £20 a tyre while they were at it too

Did you go for an E-sommet over a Spectral:on by any chance geex? I did and not regretting it!
Above mentioned Magic Mary Addix super soft:
better don't go this route. A friend has them on his bike (I bike Addix soft).
The super soft has CRAZY grip. But made for one race? These super soft tyres stick to the trail.
But... - guess around 20 afternoons on the trail and they are worn away. Super soft doesn't last at all. Addix super soft Magic Mary is a strange Schwalbe development.

Probably not a direct comparison but maybe this will help:
I normally run a 2.3 Minion 3C Exo on the trail Bike, but have recently tried a SuperGravity Mary 2.35 (purple). The difference in drag is staggering, the Mary has way more drag. All my mates run the SG Mary on trail bikes, but I'll be going back to a minion
On the front of my bike I run either: DHF 2.3 3c Maxterra EXO, Mary 2.35 Soft Addix Snakeskin, Shorty 2.5 3c Maxterra EXO, in order or best rolling resistance. Usually have two options mounted up on wheels, about to swap the Shorty out for the DHF (keeping the Mary mounted up) to enjoy the faster rolling. The DHF is noticably faster than the Mary, not night and day but noticeable. Though I'll notice going to the Aggressor on the back, from Butcher or DHR, more.
Went from a 2.5 WT maxxTerra DHF to a 2.35 Magic Mary trailstar on 35mm internals.
Wouldn't say I noticed any difference in performance or rolling speed.
The DHF however got the Maxxis "wib wobs" where the tyre deforms and has a permanent wobble, hence the swap to the Mary.
